A grand old classic meter.
4.0
The Good: It's a Simpson, and pretty much the gold standard of analog multimeters. Plenty of ranges to cover almost any type of measurement imaginable. MIRRORED dial to eliminate parallax errors. Super accurate for an averaging type meter.
The bad: With the roll-top case, this thing weighs almost six pounds. Not exactly "handy." Screw tip probes can be a challenge to insert into plugs and outlets. Yes, you can store the test leads and alligator clips in the bottom of the case. Barely.
The Ugly: My 270 came with build quality issues that didn't affect the function of the meter and were easily remedied, but they made me question why I paid almost $400 for this meter. Guess they don't make 'em like they used to...
All said and done, would I still recommend a 270? Absolutely, minus one star for the above mentioned build quality issues.

Great analog meter
5.0
As an electronics hobbyist, there are times when an analog meter is better for certain tasks. You can see trends easily and monitor changing conditions such as when discharging high capacity capacitors through a resistance. Plus it is just fun to use! Love the roll case.

Simpson 270-5RT
5.0
When your digital Fluke goes into OL when working on VVVF drives grab a Simpson 270. Great even at low frequencies you can pick an output problem in seconds. A must have meter for serious drive Technicians. When checking the DC bus at 960Volts no problem. Safe, robust, accurate.

Worth the money!!
5.0
Highly recommend. The roll top case is realy nice though it does add a bit to physical size. This meter replaced a Fluke 77 series IV, and hands doen is a better meter for my purposes as an aircraft maintenance technician.

Best new meter for the money
5.0
After a fire at work burnt up my new Fluke77 series IV, i re-evaluated what i needed in a VOM. Having made the switch from my start with an analog meter to a DMM years ago, i decided to "return to my roots". In my work as an aircraft mechanic, troubleshooting existing systems and components, and wringing out wire harneses on new installations etc, i find the Simpson head and shoulders above the DMM world. It is accurate, fast acting, easy to read and tells me much more of what is going on in a circuit than the digital meter can do. I highly recommend it!
