Excellent unit for an affordable price

5

I bought this unit to do frequency response and square wave testing on amplifiers. I had originally bought a unit in the $500 range from a different company, but I sent it back because it did not meet specifications. As you can imagine, I immediately tested this unit for specifications using a Tektronix oscilloscope once it arrived and I am happy to report that it performs well within advertised specs on the standard waveforms. I have not used the arbitrary waveform function yet.

The quick guide is easy to read and understand and the menus are intuitive. Be sure to purchase a BNC cable with alligator clips since it does not come with one.

If I have to list one complaint, it would be that the internal fan is a little noisy in my otherwise quiet shop. I intend to change it for a low noise fan once the warranty period is over.

Overall, very happy this purchase. I had never bought this brand before, but very good first impresion.

Rigol DG1032Z

3

I bought the DG1032Z to work on a phase/frequency demodulation project. The instrument is easy to set up and use. The performance is good. I was able to accomplish what I set out to do.

On the down side, it is annoying to create the phase alignment for a second channel to produce a quadrature signal for feeding a demodulator. You have to manually change the phase of the unmodulated channel until you get zero out of your demodulator. There is no mechanism to have the DG1032Z automatically create a quadrature signal locked to the center frequency of your modulated signal.

Even more annoying, if you make a change to the modulated channel, the instrument starts the new signal at an arbitrary phase. It messes up the careful phase tuning you just created.

Every time you make a change, you have to manually re-adjust the phase relationship between the channels to obtain 90 degree phase difference between the modulated and unmodulated channels.

I hope the designers at Rigol create a firmware upgrade to deal with this issue. That would make the instrument a 5-star product.

Tequipment response: The feedback on this unit has been very positive. I forwarded these comments to the Rigol R&D team for their consideration on the firmware upgrade. Rigol is usually very responsive when they receive customer feedback.
