I had only ever used an old TEK 464, and not for very long, which was great, but it didn't do quite what I needed it to do. Going from that to the ds1054z was a great step up. It is so much more capable than what I had been using, and I love using it so much that I've been going around the shop looking for things to use it on.
When I saw it online, and how easily people moved it, I assumed it would be like picking up a feather, but it has a surprising amount of gravity to it for its size and construction. It feels like a real tool, even though it's priced like a toy.
I don't really have much to say about its negatives, since I am not terribly experienced with using oscilloscopes. I guess it would be nice if they sent an actual printed manual, along with the quick start manual. I don't like PDF manuals, especially when they are large.
Even though the machine is made in China, by a Chinese company, they didn't do too bad with the manual. There are a couple places where the Chinglish shows through, but even those were fairly clear in what the meaning is.
Overall though, I love it, and I go along with everyone else in saying that I highly recommend it for anyone on a budget. It has all the features I need at the moment, and I imagine it will do me well for years to come.

The Rigol DS1054Z is simply an excellent scope for the hobbyist on a hobbyist budget.
I've put this scope to good use so far, analyzing I2C, SPI, and a switch bounce issue on an old tube guitar amp.
Yes, this scope is a bit older now and there are a couple of hot competitors out there (GW Instek GDS1054B and Siglent SDS1104X-U). To compete with these, the Rigol now comes with the higher end features, like 100MHz bandwidth, enabled, so it still holds its own and I am very happy with my purchase.
I've read some complaints about the relay clicking noise and fan noise. All of these scopes have fan noise. You're going to hear it, but if you're used to working in an electrical lab environment, it's nothing out of the ordinary. If you're sitting at home in a quiet room with nothing else going on then, yes, it's the loudest thing in the room.
My own particular gripes about the unit are (1) there's no real web interface to speak of, and the remote operation software is not user friendly and slow, and (2) the response to the controls is just a bit laggy but not terribly so. Given the age of this design compared to the newer competitors I'm not surprised. But due to these, I give it a 4 rather than 5 rating. I'm secretly hoping they'll improve the remote access with a software update, but not holding my breath, and it isn't a key feature for me.

Great features for a great price. The measurement soft keys on the left are really handy. My only complaint is the refresh time while changing the horizontal and vertical. It is slower than other digital scopes to update as you are making those adjustments. All is well though once you arrive at your desired level, so it's a minor concern. This scope is very capable, and moreso because it comes loaded with measurement tools thanks to the unlocked extra software straight from TEquipment. Quality build throughout. I'm older so I normally use reading glasses, and they do help with this instrument to read some of the smaller text (some of the on-screen text can be enlarged via settings). Some reviews speak to the fan being noticeable, but really, I did not think it was noisy at all - just a light rushing fan sound like you'd expect. Being lazy, I uses Auto a lot, which is a nice feature. Although feature packed, it will still make a good scope for the beginner to learn on - everything is there. For me, I am learning a lot in the world of digital scopes since I come from using older analog scopes. For new users, I recommend the Quick Start it's a great way to walk-through the buttons and commonly used features features.

Getting my new Rigol with options bundled included I was eager to see the options. With the usual new equipment jitters, I was pleased to see they were all installed and I didn't have to do any downloading, etc.
I wanted to see how the Rigol stacked up. From a Youtube review I knew the blue and green traces were similar. They are. The green I would say is teal but practically, light blue. However the 2 "blues" are distinguishable so not a problem. The pink I call purple.
Also from a review it was known the font sizes of letters are small. They are. Some are quite small such as measurement data. It may be a problem. Not so good,
I like the looks seeing an actual unit rather than pictures. From pictures I had thought it had a poor style to the design.
Sharing a common control for vertical didn't pose much of a problem. Though at times switching trigger and back to which vertical channel I wanted did seem to be a lot of fiddling.
A few cons. The select switch slips a lot making for a wrong selection. I talked to a guy at Rigol and he says he gets that a lot. He says muscle memory comes into play. I suppose. Also it's a hard press. Mechanically I wonder how long that switch will hold up.
In acquisition the manual led me to believe I had a choice other than sin(x)/x. Apparently not, talking to Rigol. But the manual is for the 1000 series. Maybe so on other scopes.
The screen appears smaller with the left menu.
For holdoff ranging my Instek is better. I'm spoiled. The holdout is good though.
For pros I like having hi res. I can see differences using it. While maybe old hat nowadays I think it's a great feature to have.
Also Pattern triggering is potentially very useful. There are several other triggers I didn't have.
Also in Math the option of being able to perform logical operations is exciting.
In general usage the triggering is fine as is using different memory depths.
While writing a review not a comparison, I say my Instek is the better performer for ease of use and functionality and the Rigol has more versatility. Right now, being a new scope for me, the Rigol is my main interest.

The Rigol DS1054Z is a very good choice for an entry-level oscilloscope. It is packed with features and having 4 channels is a definite bonus although having a single, shared set of vertical scale and offset controls takes some getting used to.
Two disappointments are imprecise voltage measurements and not being able to turn off the display of inputs used in math operations.

I’m thrilled with this scope, after three weeks of ownership. I’m using far more of the advanced features than I anticipated. In this price range, I hadn’t been even thinking of targeting needs like RS232 decoding and triggering, SPI, I2C etc. But being able to cross reference serial comms from my Arduino back to the PC with what’s going on with the downstream electronics has been amazing. I’ve also been using the third and fourth inputs on the scope to give programmatic triggering of the scope from my Arduino - which helped me track down a poor clock signal in a project I was building.
The product builds overall feels very high quality. Very solid, reasonably heavy. Probably the only negative is that the entire width of the screen can’t be used to see the signal, but that’s a pretty minor concern, the screen is already quite wide. Overall, this is a 10/10 product

A software update fixed a "2 detents to change" encoder issue (in general, mechanical encoders are notoriously difficult to integrate, and have really bad wear issues). Text on the screen is a bit small for my old eyes, fan is a bit loud, the FFT could be more responsive and useful, the control panel and screen are rather busy, but beyond that I don't have anything negative to report. Came with four 1x/10x probes that work fine, boxed well for shipment. For what it is and can do it's a tremendous bargain!

The menu structure is a little quirky in places, but easy to learn. The front panel is layout is pretty good. The response time is fine for hobby work but would be a little slow if I were in a big hurry on a commercial bench. I just retired so now electronics is my hobby and not a profession. I'm pretty old school so I'm comparing this scope to my trusty Tektronix 465 100 Mhz scope. Happily, the Rigol is very easy to use right out of the box and all of the common essential functions are still accessed through knobs and buttons. There are a bunch of menu driven options - not my favorite way to set up gear - but even those are easy to navigate. I've heard complaints about all modern digital scopes crashing (anything that's software driven will crash after all) but I haven't experienced any problems with mine. I sure don't need all 4 channels all the time but how can you go wrong at this price? Most of my applications are audio (I build analog synthesizers) so 50Mhz is more than enough bandwidth for what I do. This is my third purchase from TEquipment and as always it has been a great experience. If you only need 50Mhz of bandwidth, you can't go wrong with this scope.

What I like the vertical and horizontal buttons on the side with lots of options. I have heard some say the screen is a little small. But compared to the size of the unit it a good size and I have to ware reading glasses. The screen is easy to read. Then there is a real nice save or print button. XY mode can have a split screen or with a push of a button YT mode for wave sine. Lots of measurements can be seen on the screen with just a push of a button. There is a lot more and the price you just can't beat it. I am currently troubleshooting a TV with it and found 5 defective electrolytic capacitors with this DS1054Z oscilloscope. This is a very usable and affordable scope. The user interface is very intuitive and is easy to pick up, and is for the most part reasonably responsive (not lightning quick, but usable). It does all the basic things I expect in an oscilloscope right, and I would highly recommend it. I have not tried using the PC interface yet or played around much with the serial decode options. Pros: 1. I really like the deep memory and 4 channels. For what I do this is more useful than very high bandwidth/sample rate. 2. The UI for basic things is fully functional; fine/coarse resolution adjustments, centering, and cursors. The single set of vertical control knobs took a little adjusting to, but I wouldn't consider this detrimental. This is by far the biggest pro for me. 3. The base seems reasonably solid, and I don't have any issues pushing buttons. 4. While I don't use the advanced features that often, it's nice that they're there for when I do need them. Cons: 1. The math function is main exception to being "reasonably responsive" I've noticed so far. It just takes more time for it to update compared to everything else. 2. I don't know how usable the FFT feature is. It does seem to allow you to use the full memory* or just the on-screen display data, but I have noticed a few quirks: - When I have a really large time base, it doesn't let you use the full memory anymore (seems > 100ms/div is the limit?) - You can't display only the fft; you either get ~2/3 a screen of the fft, or the fft is layered underneath whatever channel on the full screen - You can only have a linear frequency axis - There are some strange limits on the frequency axis scale. It makes probing "low frequency" modes nearly impossible (low as in few kHz). For example, I couldn't even get a nice fft of the built-in 1kHz probe test signal. 3. Boot time is longer than I'm used to, but I've also mostly only played with old DSO's and analog scopes, so perhaps this is something associated with modern feature-full scopes? In any case, it's not too much of a burden since all I have to do is turn it on and leave it on at the start of the day when I want to use it. 4. While adding measurements is super easy, I have not really found any good way to remove them (there's some obscure method by going through the measurements menu). With statistics off the measurements don't take up much screen real estate, but it would be nice if the left menu buttons used for turning measurements on would instead toggle them on/off. I would consider these all minor issues for me since from past experience I very rarely use the math functions, and I have a PC accessible right next to my scope so I can do proper Fourier analysis by exporting the data.

This scope includes many features, which are very useful. Also, the free software makes it greater, and it worth the price. The four channels with four different colors make it easy to use. Many math operations including an FFT is really nice. Its pretty easy to get the hang of the scope pretty fast. After a one day, I had most of it down, but there are still a few options buried in menus that I seem to keep forgetting where they are and have to look it up. It was a little confusing that photo #5 on this site for the DS1054Z shows the back of the scope with 2 sources, that don't actually come with the DS1054Z, only a higher more expensive model. On that same note, neither Tequipment nor Rigol actually give you a full list of all features for this specific scope or any other, but instead, the features are lumped in with the entire DS1000z series, so that you don't know for sure what you are really getting. There should be a complete list of all features (ie. all of the Math functions) for each scope of this series either on this site of Rigol. If they are all the same then have one list, and at least say what's different about each scope. I also really liked the ability to put the entire screen onto my PC screen and control most of the functions with the included USB and the free software. But, its a little cumbersome getting all the software because of the hoops you have to jump through before you get it all loaded and working, specifically the surprising requirement of IVI, (Interchangeable Virtual Instrumentation), a set of standards for test and measurement instrument drivers. Even though it was all free it was a lot to go through to get it all running. In the end, Fast shipping, and easy to contact both Tequipment and Rigol technical help was a plus. I recommend this product.

I am mostly Audio gear and I have been looking for a scope since my old '50s/60s era Tektronic scope failed to fire up. Dave Jones at EEVblog did a good job of reviewing this scope and I must agree for the price it is good value for money.
The day after I bought this scope, I received notice that I had won an equipment auction for 2 more scopes (the notice was delayed otherwise I would not have purchased the Rigol DS1054Z at 50 MHZ)
So now I have a Tektronics TDS420A (200 MHZ) and a LeCroy 9314M (400 MHZ) to compare against. All 3 machines are 4 channel.
Both the Tek and LeCroy came well outfitted with software (they came from the closed Boeing factory I used to work at, Aerospace does not skimp on options :P ) and speed of the machines aside, the make good marks to compare against though both are digital front ends with CRT displays. I am an old fart and I tend to prefer the weight and solid feel of the old gear.
The Rigol was purchased under the bundle program but when I entered the codes to activate the software my finger slipped an I entered the wrong SER# by one number. I contacted Rigol and customer service told me to check the installed options, everything should be turned on. I checked and it already had everything turned on. This was from the factory so is it now standard for everything to be on? IDK but it is nice. The machine appeared to be new in the box and not a return from another customer.
The Rigol menu structure is easy to use and aside from a few odd choices for button names vs what they do, it is pretty natural to use.
The probes seem a bit light but when you consider that the scope is 50 MHZ they are good enough to not need any upgrades right away.
The Rigol does feel light and built to a budget but remember I am used to 20# to 30# machines intended for commercial industrial use in the '90s and cost many thousands of $ at the time, .... so there is that LOL. If I had to go on location for a call, I would pick up the Rigol, it just is a lot easier to take with you.
I am having a hard time adjusting to the digital display and I do prefer the CRT displays of the other units even when you consider they are monochrome VS the color display on the Rigol.
I do miss the auto detect for probes on the Rigol but as long as you remember to set 1 or X10 in the software, it isn't a big deal.
Is the Rigol the Be all, End all perfect machine for everyone? Well no, and no machine at any price is.
I would have given it 4.5 stars but that was not a choice so I gave it 4.

This is my first foray into a hobbyist oscilloscope, and I purchased the Rigol DS1054Z after seeing many online reviews and videos. A book that recommended the equipment for a hobbyist Electronics Workshop made this the first major purchase for me (after a new digital multimeter) and I was quite excited when it arrived.
My first use was to measure the output of an Arduino Uno that I had programmed to use pulse width modulation to control LED light strips. I had to poke and twist for quite some time to get the display that I wanted and I think my combined time reading and watching usage videos exceeded a semester of college coursework. Well, I'm only partially serious about that, but I'm not sure I know the exact steps that I did to make it work.
Later, a friend came to my workshop to measure a circuit board he had designed and manufactured and neither of us could get this oscilloscope to display what we needed to display. So, our conclusion is it isn't very intuitive on how to use this.
That said, I've been continuing to read and watch videos with tips and techniques and I am making progress. After adding the DG1022Z I now have a way of using a known good signal to set things up and I'm hoping this launching me on my way.
Again, I'm a beginner not an experienced user and what I lack in skill I make up for in interest so I'm sure these two Rigol products will serve me well once I have them figured out.

4. While I don't use the advanced features that often, it's nice that they're there for when I do need them.
Cons:
1. The math function is main exception to being "reasonably responsive" I've noticed so far. It just takes more time for it to update compared to everything else.
2. I don't know how usable the FFT feature is. It does seem to allow you to use the full memory* or just the on-screen display data, but I have noticed a few quirks:
- When I have a really large time base, it doesn't let you use the full memory anymore (seems > 100ms/div is the limit?)
- You can't display only the fft; you either get ~2/3 a screen of the fft, or the fft is layered underneath whatever channel on the full screen
- You can only have a linear frequency axis
- There are some strange limits on the frequency axis scale. It makes probing "low frequency" modes nearly impossible (low as in few kHz). For example, I couldn't even get a nice fft of the built-in 1kHz probe test signal.
3. Boot time is longer than I'm used to, but I've also mostly only played with old DSO's and analog scopes, so perhaps this is something associated with modern feature-full scopes? In any case, it's not too much of a burden since all I have to do is turn it on and leave it on at the start of the day when I want to use it.
4. While adding measurements is super easy, I have not really found any good way to remove them (there's some obscure method by going through the measurements menu). With statistics off the measurements don't take up much screen real estate, but it would be nice if the left menu buttons used for turning measurements on would instead toggle them on/off.
I would consider these all minor issues for me since from past experience I very rarely use the math functions, and I have a PC accessible right next to my scope so I can do proper Fourier analysis by exporting the data.

The DS1054 is a powerful instrument. The 50 MHz bandwidth is a serious limitation for some folks; a money saver for others. Expanding bandwidth is costly, but there are examples of this type scope for higher bandwidths. There are a lot of features packed in this $350 scope. You can save set-ups on a thumb drive as well as high definition screen shots. A peek at the waveform spectrum can be attained using the resident FFT. It should be noted that sweep frequency has considerable effect on this display. The vertical and horizontal menus provide for a variety of waveform data including pulse width and amplitude etc. There is a self calibrate function and the 4 probes provide frequency calibration for the 10X mode using the scopes cal signal.
Using software downloaded from Rigol’s site you can marry the scope with your laptop (USB) for presentations etc. When operating under Windows 7 the latest version of ultra sigma and ultra scope need to be used. I made the mistake of downloading an earlier version and experienced some difficulty in removing registry remnants of National Instruments features which prevented the scope from being recognized.
In the problems solved category, I experienced input bleed over between inputs as well as mysterious waveform displays. The Tequipment folks offered to return it and also provided a support number at Rigol. So I called Rigol to see if there was a simple solution. The Rigol tech suggested restoring factory defaults using a unique key press during booting. It worked; been flawless since.

But, its a little cumbersome getting all the software because of the hoops you have to jump through before you get it all loaded and working, specifically the surprising requirement of IVI, Interchangeable Virtual Instrumentation, a set of standards for test and measurement instrument drivers. Even though it was all free it was a lot to go through to get it all running.
In the end, Fast shipping, and easy to contact both Tequipment and Rigol technical help was a plus. I recommend this product.

This is a great piece of equipment for the money. I already have a 100MHz Picoscope 3205D MSO, but there are times when you need more than 2 analog channels, and situations where it is useful to have a standalone scope. So, with some reservations about spending money I didn't necessarily need to spend, I went ahead and bought the DS1054Z.
I've been using it for about a week and I am really happy with it. Once in a while I have to go to the manual, but for the most part I don't. All of the commonly used channel, time base and trigger functions you find on higher-end Agilent scopes are easy to find and generally work as expected. Likewise for using cursors, taking measurements, saving screen images, and using the convenient rows of context-dependent buttons on each side of the screen.
I have not yet used the serial decode options. The assortment is limited and they aren't really why I bought the scope, but they are nice to have and will probably come in handy at some point. I also haven't made much use of the remote control interface, but I saw and verified that with the scope connected to LAN you can save a screen image with a single linux shell command:

Thanks to RoGeorge's blog for this, it's a slick and convenient alternative to monkeying around with a flash drive. The DS1054Z user interface for creating and editing text strings is tedious, you'll experience this entering a license code for any options you get for the scope.
At this point the DS1054Z seems to be a real bargain at the price. I feel like I'm using a much more expensive piece of test equipment, it looks and feels well made and I enjoy working with it. I'm definitely glad I made the purchase decision.

I have the Rigol 2072 which is an excellent scope, but often felt frustrated at having only 2 channels. When this went on sell with decoders, memory and bandwidth upgrade, I jumped on it!
As others have notes, the front end is a little noisy, and the probes are a bit cheap (I've bought used tek probes on ebay when my old ones broke)
The decoding functions are a bit clunky, but much better than the open source logic analyzers I've used, and quite usable enough to help me debug an i2c problem on a recent project. They probalby won't help you reverse engineer a protocol, but they will tell you enough to make sure you have it working with proper pullups etc.

I bought the Rigol DS1054Z about a month ago. Before that I was using a very good analogue unit. Wow, what an upgrade this has been!
At first I thought it was going to be hard to use, but I found the basic instruction manual is very well written and the controls very intuitive.
It took me about 30 minutes to be comfortable using it as my first digital oscilloscope. Most of this time was forcing myself to read the instructions rather than just jump in and try to figure it out by myself.
I have had a chance to test the unit with various projects that I am learning as a student doing an electronics course at a technical institution. I have found this unit much easier to use than my home scope and ones in the classroom.

I am amazed how much one gets with this scope. I am replacing an excellent Tektronix 475. I like the accuracy of the frequency counter, accurate values of level and time with a cursor. It has measurement values featured I am not aware of. I do wish dB would be one of those front line values shown. That could be fixed with a software upgrade. Yes, I did work with the Math and Measurement function and saw dB, but it not like being there as a choice with other main values. Fluke meters can express dB levels. The probe tips are brittle, I lost a tip by bumping the probes. The excellent support of Tequipment said they are sending a replacement. That is excellent support. I haven't received it yet, but several follow ups indicated they have not forgotten me.
I hope Rigol can offer a dB reference value, easier than the doing the Math and Measurement.
I give it 5 stars, it is such a great deal!

There are certain milestones that, looking back, the hobbyist recognizes as huge leaps in their understanding and capability.
Buying and using a digital storage oscilloscope turned out to be one of those times for me.
There are so may ways in which a circuit can malfunction, appearing inert. The diligent, clever technician can probably work through these, given time and some basic tools. For the hobbyist with limited time, such a situation can prove a major roadblock.
A scope like this provides unprecedented insight into the workings (or failings) of the circuit, often reducing troubleshooting from hours to minutes. My only regret is in not having prioritized investment in an instrument like this years ago.

My Tequipment shopping experience was sub-optimal, so I have to ding the product to air my concern with the agent. First off, great scope!!! I can't fault it at all and the deal from Tequipment was excellent also. My issue was delivery. I asked for a single shipment (I ordered several items at once) to minimize fees at my receiver since they charge me per package received. Tequipment ignored my request and shipped each item as it became available. Added $40 extra to my purchase. I was not happy. Contacted Tequipment and they offered a discount on my next order but I really would have preferred they followed my shipping instructions first time.

I had ordered a competitor's 2ch higher bandwidth scope since that one had serial decoding included in the price. It was a nice scope but locked up hard two times over two days, one time while just sitting on the bench not really doing anything.
So I returned that one, and as I was getting ready to reorder I found out that Rigol was doing the bundle special to turn on nearly all the features in the DS1054Z. So even with only 50 MHz bandwidth that was too good a deal to pass by for a 4 Ch scope.
After a brief learning curve I can say this scope is great. It already saved me a great deal of time on an embedded system project I've been contracted to work on. The SPI decoding, even though it is only software based, works great.
Some people have complained about the multi-function knob being too sensitive. I have not found that to be the case, once in a while I may over or under shoot but that is rare.
So far the only negative, and it is pretty minor, is that the fan is a little bit noisy, Not excessively, but it is noisier than the competitor's model I had ordered orginially.
But a piece of test gear is only as good as the support behind it.
Tequipment is great, and they got me the free bundle upgrade very quickly, even though the Amazon e-mail system made it challenging to get them my direct e-mail address so the license details could be sent to me.
And I had a couple of learning curve related issues that I contacted Rigol support about and they were also very responsive and very helpful.
I would certainly purchase another Rigol product in the future if needed, and would purchase again from Tequipment for sure.

It's hard to find a scope this capable for this amount of money. The added free software functions are also a bonus.
The buttons respond nice and the color and intensity of the display is good. My only real concerns are some of the cursor and measurement functions are difficult to navigate through the onscreen commands and the lack of the automatic probe compensation pads surrounding the BNC connectors. The latter isn't much of an issue though if you just use the probes that come with it.
I highly reccommend picking one up if you're a beginner or hobbyist, the price is hard to beat

The decisive point for my purchase was when the price dropped to $349 with a promotion where some licenses to upgrade the equipment were given for free.
I'm a detail oriented person. The equipment is not perfect. Looking for finishing problems may be possible to find small flaws, however, nothing to bother with. It is a good product for the price.
Anyway, for now, the equipment is worth 5 stars. I need to use it more to be able to do more considerations. For now, I would buy it again.

I have read reviews on the this scope for a while and when the free options were offered no brainer to pull the trigger and purchase this scope. The people at Tequipment were knowledgeable and pleasant to when I had questions and talking my order. (Thank you)
I like the design and layout of this scope and its intuitive controls with a context help menu button is a great feature in learning the advanced functions.
This scope feels solid (not a toy) and the resolution of the display is good and clear and the data display is easy to see pleasing to the eye.
After just a week I found that the new options are spectacular it has a similar feel as the analog scope
I have already tested the I2c and serial options and found that they are great for analyzing data and troubleshooting communications issues with ham radio and microcontrollers.
The XY plots are much improved over the older version of the Rigol entry series scopes.
The persistence settings have a phosphor look to them in either dot or vector settings.
I like the FFT option but it could use some love from the programmers and the navigation system
with the user interface and scrolling through the spectral waveform markers would be a nice options.
Unbelievable options
At $350 Bucks with all the options enabled this scope is a great deal.
This gets my “I Would Buy it Again!” Stamp of approval!

We purchased one of these scopes for our makerspace (www.hive13.org) and it has been working in our electronics area for a while.
I liked it so much I purchased one for myself. My previous hobby scope was a Hantek, but with only 2 channels and the weak interface I just wasn't happy.
The Rigol has been preforming well beyond expectations and with the current sale the price can't be beat.
I did some quick comparisons with a function generator and the scope was right on the money.

LOVE THIS SCOPE! Oh my goodness....it has SO MANY features.
We're a county-wide team, and we have students from many schools. This scope just fits right in with us. it's so easy to read. Has a bright-clear display. Auto-display waveform voltages, frequencies, locks right on in a heart-beat to all of our sensor and arduino (and other microcontroller) waveforms. The Stop/Run is basically perfect. You press Stop, then roll the Horizontal Position dial a tiny bit, and the waveform for all (4) channels clears up instantly.
We have it plugged into the LAN, and we "PRINT" directly to a USB Memory Stick for moving files to the PC, for email, posting into slack.com (our team management blog), and for displaying waveform graphs in meetings (we are currently building a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite for launch in 2018....besides our regular robotics duties! We're trouble shooting Arduino to DAC protocols over SPI and other I2C packets.
We haven't yet paid the approx. $180 to upgrade to the packet decoding firmware. But, the first 30 hours using it was phenomenal. That's a little steep of a price for just that functionality, but it'll prove worth it. And, we'll probably be paying another $180-$200 for the other I2C, RS232, serial data, etc., decoding capability. By the time we finish with that, yes, now we're going to be up to an $800 scope. But, it's operating so pro-like, that I'm not feeling hesitant to do these upgrades. Do wish we could locate a not-for-profit 1/2 off discount, though, for these upgrades!

Phenomenal value. Incredibly deep memory, and features can easily be upgraded to those of more expensive ds1000 series scopes later.
One caveat is that the front end electronics are noisier than Tektronics, etc which are admittedly MUCH more expensive. This is typical of inexpensive Chinese scopes, but if you don't use the highest sensitivity settings then you can save a tremendous amount of money.

THIS is the entry level scope to get. The screen size and resolution are the smallest I'd want to use. It does not "feel" like a small screen. (because it isn't!) At first I did not think I'd used all four channels but with four I can have a useful logic analyzer. I'm working on embedded microprocessors and motion control I can see both logical level control and power on the same screen and take good-enough measurements. The ability to capture data and send it to people is so much better than emailing a cell phone photo of the analog scope screen
My only complaint is the FFT screens. They are hard to read and hard to interpret. Still 5 stars because of over all build , value and ease of use

When I unboxed the unit I found it to be well packed and well padded by the packing material. I could not wait to start using the DSO. The user interface with the various buttons and dials took a little getting used to. I found the interface a little unresponsive, for example when enabling or disabling channels you might have to press the button a couple of times to get it accept the selection. I also found it disconcerting to hear relays clicking as I changed the vertical scale. I could have lived with this behaviour but when I started to examine the waveforms, either from the calibration output or from shorted inputs, I found there was high frequency noise present superimposed on the waveform.
The noise occupied 1 increment (2mm) on the vertical axis irrespective of the vertical scale and irrespective of the channel or channels selected. I tried different probes, those that came with the unit and others that I already owned, and it did not make any difference. There appears to be an issue with the vertical amplifier. I contacted TEquipment and they promptly organised an RMA to return the unit. Unfortunately I have to wait until they receive the unit back, and test it before sending a replacement. They did offer me the option of buying another and then getting a credit back when they receive back the original unit but who wants to pay double for something that arrives faulty?
I will update the review when I have received the replacement and tested it out.

Once you get familiar with the scope and its many capabilities, you won't want to look at any other possibilities to meet your scope requirements.
I just can't believe I can get this much value in an essential instrument for this price.
The ONLY drawback I found to the scope is it doesn't provide a contrast setting so you're not able to adjust the display as well as you might like for the lighting conditions of the room.
But for $400, I'm adjusting quite nicely!

We purchased this scope for our makerspace (Hive13.org).
Our aging analog scopes were great for introduction to basic electronics but didn't have any storage (and the small CRT was hard for multiple people to see).
After a great deal of research the Rigol 1054Z arose to the top for the best "bang for the buck".
This is part of the new Asian value scopes that deliver almost all the features of the big names (Tektronix, Keysight) for about 1/2 the price.
While I don't think they have quite the build quality of the military grade Tek line, I do feel they meet the need of the hobbyist.
I personally bought a Hantek scope with similar features a few months ago, and I now wish I had gotten the Rigol.
All these types of scopes usually suffer mostly from poor user interface design. You can really feel the menu structure and language is not quite baked. Comparing the Hantek to the Rigol I really feel like Rigol spent much more time on usability and overall appearance.
I now know why the Rigol continues to win comparisons on the value scope line.
We plan on putting this scope in our electronics lab as the main unit.
I'm giving a class on the operation this weekend and I've dug pretty deep into the various menus and overall operation and I am still in love with this scope.

I'm a seasoned software developer of 30 years. I bought this scope to help me learn more about electrical circuits as I started doing more bare-metal embedded programming.
I haven't touched an oscope this century, so I was a little intimidated. All those fears were for naught - my experience with the Rigol DS1054z has been fabulous. It is very easy to use and I have been exploring/using various functions (e.g., math, triggers, etc.).

The Rigol DS1054Z is an AMAZING oscilloscope! I had an Instek 100 Mhz dual trace from 2008 and this scope is so much more capable I can't believe it at a $399 price point. I particularly like the many trigger options including greater than less than triggering (pulse greater than 5 ms but less than 10 ms). Also the RS-232 decoding is a very nice feature. The many horizontal and vertical measuring options and the 4 input channels make this a real winner; a Tektronix scope that can do this is 2-3X more costly. I use this every day and aside from the slightly noisy fan (nit picking) I haven't found a downside.

This is a great scope with features that are missing on name brand scopes that cost several times more. At work I have access to many highend scopes that have all the bells and whistles one would want or need, this scope has most all of the same features just with lower bandwidth making it a great home bench scope. My only gripe with the scope is the yellow probe tip insulators do not stay on as well as they should. I normally use the clip ends anyhow making a non-isuue.

Nice scope with lots of features. It's solid and feels well built right down to the nice probes.
The display is small but nice and sharp with lots of info. The brightness is adequate, but it would be nicer to have a brighter backlight. The waveform has a nice analog scope feel thanks to the intensity grading. The viewing angle suffers a bit if put on a high shelf.
The main shortcomings are protocol decoding/triggering which are better done with a dedicated logic analyzer. The FFT isn't very useful, it just seems like a way to check off a feature item.
The deep memory is nice to have as are the 4 channels.
One minor annoyance is the huge battery of measurements turned on by the left row of buttons aren't as easily turned off and end up cluttering the screen. Holding down the "measurement" button for 5 seconds clears them all, but a more intuitive 2nd press on the left button should turn off the corresponding measurement.
The connectivity options over USB and ethernet are useful for extending the capability of the scope with PC based processing.
All in all it's a great scope and a very useful tool, and thanks to its popularity and widespread use is well supported by the manufacturer, and more importantly by the large user base and tools/info on the internet.

Only gripe is the FFT hardly works (too few sample points). If this is feature you rely on, maybe bump up a model.

Bought this as my first digital scope an up grade from a Tek 935a and an RCA WC-91c an old but decent 4Mhz work horse both old scopes are best for low frequency work an the 1054Z will finally let me trouble shoot modern equipment. The 1054Z is easy to use once you get the feel for how the menus work.Great display frequency counter on channel 1 is hardware, accurate, and agrear feature. Can't say enough good about this entry level feature packed scope. Would definitely recommend this unit.

It comes with most functions for general usage. I like the huge screen and 12MB deep memory very much.
The shipping box does not has a CD inside, although the website says that it has a "Resource CD (User’s Guide and Application Software)". Anyhow, the software can be downloaded online.

This is my first scope and will primarily use it for my hobby. After tons of research, I found this scope to be a bit more than I need, however I couldn't really pass it up. It has all the goodies you see in the higher dollar scopes, while maintaining an entry-level price point. I figure it is something I'll have for a long time and it has the option to pay for upgrades (sadly no official bandwidth upgrade though, at least no official one, I heard there's a hack...at your own discretion)
A lot of people recommended this scope and I can totally see why. Just make sure you are current with the firmware updates because there are occasional glitches that get discovered and ironed out.

Interface is just a bit slow, but I've adjusted to it and it doesn't bother me. Nothing that hinders use.
FFT is too low resolution for any real use, at least in my experience. I find myself grabbing the waveform over the LXI connection and then performing the FFT in Matlab on my PC.
Fan is a tad loud, but it is quieter than my PC

I only had this a few days so far, so I can not comment on the performance. I have been using a Tektronix 7503 150 MHtz for years, but my wife bought a new car and I now have no room in the garage for it. The 7503 was huge and heavy and the DS1054Z is small and very portable compared to it. I had to bring all the equipment to be tested down to the garage before. Now, it will be a pleasure to be able to bring the DS1054Z upstairs where I need it.
I can tell there will be quite a learning curve with all the menus etc. All the controls on the analog scopes are pretty intuitive. Going through the different menus, I can see this scope has many-many more functions than the old one.
TEquipment shipped the unit very quickly, but FedX's shipping was very slow and their tracking was sparse.

The Rigol DS1054Z is currently the best value scope available by a huge margin. Lots of features, such as 4 channels, digital phosphorous, more math and measurement functions than I think we will ever need, and LXI Ethernet!
My only real complaint is that the "trial" features timeout based on the scope's "on time" not the time using the features. We won't have time to test most of them before the trials expire. (Yes, I know they are "hackable", but that's not the point.

I purchased this item as an upgrade from a cheaper USB/PC based oscilloscope. This unit is so much more functional than what it replaces:
1. quick access to a much larger number of measurements
2. working consistently -- no software issues
3. large number of trigger setup
4. larger buffer of data points at smaller time bases
5. faster to work with large buffers
The human factor of how an oscilloscope is used cannot be ignored. With a PC based scope the mouse is used for almost all functions limiting the possible interactions. With this unit many functions can be performed with one hand easily(e.g. single trigger) while using the other hand to work with a probe. The scope UI has very excellent shortcuts to make quick work of common functions (e.g. selecting horizontal/vertical cursor positions with the multifunction knob).
I am impressed with the value and performance of this instrument. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a scope.

I have been searching ebay, craigslist and other online marketplaces for almost a year for a good used scope that didn't require half of my workbench (nor 2 weeks' wages!) without luck. Most of the affordable ones available were older analog 2 channel, 20mhz or less (I already have an analog 10mhz tek 4 channel) and the digital scopes were either low specs and old, or a bit better performing but but high priced. I kept coming back and comparing to TEquipment.NET I even saw tequipment sells on ebay!
Finally decided on the rigol DS1054Z, and am still discovering new functions, like waveform storage, fft math, other math, etc,
Still learning the ins and outs of this instrument, but I don't think I'll ever use all the features. While I've run across some instances where a built-in signal source or even a MSO would come handy, I'l make do with the 4-channel (for now)
The instruments' design and appearance is wonderful, the buttons have a nice soft nonslip texture, screen is very sharp and shows clear waveforms.
Now for the bad:
Fan is noisy, and I can see where it will get to be annoying if I used it more.
The two blue colored channels are too much alike. One of them should have been a different color.
Both these negs could be easy fixes: fan should not have made it into the box, as loud as it is, and a firmware update should take care of the channel color. I look forward to seeing this color change update in the near future, as I'm sure I am not the first or only one to complain about it.
All considering, Nothing I've seen on the market (used or new) comes close to matching this value, and I have no qualms recommending this scope for hobby use or even light industrial use. A BEST BUY for sure.

I bought this about a year ago for recording capacitor discharge on a 72.5kV circuit breaker. I've had many digital scopes over the years starting with a Nicolet Explorer III , various Tektronix scopes, and this is the best. The noise immunity is fantastic. We are measuring up to 100kA discharges at about 120kHz, and as long as one is careful with grounding the scope performs super well. Most scopes don't doo well in high voltage (large dv/dt), and High current (high di/dt) environments. 2 years earlier I bought a 2 channel TENMA scope ($369) which works but the screen is hard to read and the manual is impossible.
The Rigol manual is of the best ever. The English is great and all the details are explained well.
I figure this is a "loss leader" to get folks hooked on such a great scope. Getting the data out is quite cumbersome. I believe it is probably easier on the higher priced models. It would be nice to have isolated inputs with no common "ground" probably available for more $$ also a lithium battery powered version would be good. sometimes the 1500V isolation transformer isn't enough and a totally floating scope would be useful. I can run it for 50 minutes with an inverter powered by a 14.4V NiCad drill battery (3AH size) the inverter pulls about 3.5A
So improvements for me:
1) More direct I/O capability to store wave forms as .xls format with scaling etc.
2) internal battery for 2 hour operation (minimum)
3) fully isolated inputs to withstand 1kV between input "grounds"
my company paid 10k$ for a Tektronix with 4 channels and a whopping 30k of memory per channel. yes that was 25 years ago. Really for $400. this is a super bargain. I don't need more than 50MHz bandwidth, but the other features I mentioned would be nice. Grace & Peace Roy

I am coming at my review from the angle of an analog scope user. I am comfortable using analog scopes and wasn't sure if upgrading to a modern, more complex and feature rich scope would lead to a noticeable improvement or enhanced workflow. I was wrong. It is dead simple to use for even a beginner (with excellent help menus for nearly every function, button and measurement capability) yet stocked full of advanced options for the experienced engineer. It comes with FOUR 150mHz passive probes (a real bargain especially at the asking price), fully functional USB and Ethernet ports and a solid users manual.
I cannot imagine a more feature packed, well built, upgrade able oscilloscope with performance matching much more expensive units. The display is bright with clear text and easily viewable from most bench top angles. The supplied probes or better than expected, flexible and well constructed. Did I mention you get FOUR included with your purchase?
The key factor with any piece of test gear is performance. That is an area well handled by the Rigol DS1054Z. During my initial use of the scope I found it to be accurate and reliable with repeatable results. It is simple to use with reliable results and comes with an extensive onboard help menu for nearly every aspect of the oscilloscope and its operations.
I do not often write reviews but when I do it is for something I feel strongly about. If you are looking for a well featured, reliable and accurate oscilloscope but can't justify spending $1000 or more on one I wouldn't hesitate in purchasing the Rigol DS1054Z.

I bought this scope (Rigol DS1054Z, 4 channels, 50MHz) as a second scope, for an associate to use in helping me develop an embedded product. My other scope is an Agilent DSOX3014A (4 channels, 100MHz). The Agilent is certainly the better scope in some respects, but the Rigol seems to come close in many respects. Given the serious cost difference (the Agilent list price is now about 10x what I paid for the Rigol), the Rigol scope seems to me to provide much more value/$. For most of my applications, the Rigol scope is very adequate.
Some pluses: Both LXI and USB interfaces are included.
A fairly intuitive interface. A good-size screen on a relatively small enclosure. Good memory depth. Four nice looking probes with 1x/10x selection (my Agilent only came with four 10x probes; I prefer the Rigol probes).
A few cons: Apparently there is no real-time clock, so files all are saved with a default date/time, which makes it harder to track the screenshots, etc. Trace colors include dark blue and light blue (rather than blue and green), seems somewhat of an odd choice of colors. No way to upgrade to a mixed-signal scope. Other upgrade options are rather limited compared to the Agilent scope.
Conclusion: For the price (I paid $399), this is a great scope. If its advertised features are all you need in a scope, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The scope has an awesome large LCD screen, which is the best part. The controls make sense, although they are bit too tightly packed due to the screen size. Not having individual vertical and horizontal adjustments for each channel is a bummer; you get used to it though. The measurements features are easy to use on the left side of the screen. The Ethernet/usb connection is great. You can use it to take screenshots and save right on your scope. I used the waveform counter a lot for testing, although it is a bit slow and doesn't count the complicated waveforms I use. If you have simple pulses, etc. it will count well at certain settings. I reported a waveform count glitch and the engineer at Rigol was responsive and sent me beta firmware to test. They eventually solved this bug that was overflowing my count, rendering it useless. For the price, it rocks!

This scope comes very well-packaged in a cardboard box with roughly 6 inches of foam padding protecting all sides. After unboxing, the scope immediately powers up, and is ready to use. At first, the scope contains a trial firmware, good for 200 minutes of use, or something like that. I immediately entered the license key to unlock all features of the scope, including the 200Mhz sample rate! You can get this key either by contacting rigol, or you can find a third-party site that will provide you with a key based on your model and serial number. The interface take only minutes to become familiar with, after which it is very intuitive. Everything is where you expect it to be, and does what you'd expect it to do. The build quality of the scope is superb, and all buttons and knobs look and feel fine. Upon bootin the unit, you can see 2 lights behind the front panel where it looks like buttons should be. These spaces contain buttons on other models, however (most likely for cost of production) they did not remove the backlights for these buttons on this model. The lights stay off after the scope boots, so this isn't really an issue in any way. The performance of the firmware is amazing for a scope in this price range. The signal refresh rate is essentially instantaneous with the memory depth and timescale properly set. There are oodles of useful measurements which can be chosen from a persistent menu on the left side of the display that has its own set of buttons. The scope has xy-mode, however it is limited to dot-display in this mode, and I have not found a way to enlarge the xy display, as by default xy is shown on the bottom of the screen, and a time-domain view above that. The scope probes feel somewhat cheap, however the build quality looks fine, and they function perfectly; it is only the material that makes them feel cheap. The scope has probe calibration terminals, and the probes come with a tool to easily adjust the probe's compensation. I have already used it the scope to observe the output of a pwm motor speed controller, and view audio signals with the xy mode successfully. ...consider the Instek GDS-1054B which looks like it might be a better 50 MHz scope with a few more features and better user interface for a few $ less.
The Rigol only has one vertical control multiplexed among the 4 channels which can be slightly clunky & annoying. Also, the 1054Z FFT uses only something like 20K points whereas the Instek uses 1M pts. That's the difference between a white noise spectrum looking like a bunch of peaks on the Rigol vs. a relatively straight line.
However, if you need/want a 100MHz scope and are comfortable hacking the 1054Z to get the extra bandwidth, this is the one!

Once in a while, I buy something because it's a bargain (which this is) and end up loving it because it's just great period. This is one of those times.
Rigol, if you're reading this, a few suggestions to make a great product perfect:
- need an easy button press to automatically move the vert position of a signal so that its CENTER (average) is in the middle of the screen. In modern designs we often work with single supplies, so our signals often have a Vcc/2 bias. Alternately, make a fast/coarse adjustment option. The way it is now, signals with a proportionately large DC offset force you to twirl the vert position knob for literally OVER A MINUTE to get your signal on screen.
- group some menus more logically, e.g. in the FFT menu the Offset & Scale must typically be changed together you shouldn't have to scroll the menu to go between those options.
- make the last-pressed illuminated channel-select button glow brighter. That way you wouldn't accidentally press the button twice in a row and unintentionally turn off the channel instead. This tends to happen because the channel-select buttons do double duty as a menu-select key.

So I decided to take a chance on the Rigol. It's really the best value in a scope that I've seen and for anyone with on old analog scope, this is light years ahead. I saw this oscilloscope on the EEVBlog, and it was recommended as a market changer, it seems like it was all true. The build quality is really good the plastics are firm nothing is flimsy, the scope is easy to use and most of the functions can be seen on the scope because it has good illuminated buttons for most functions, the screen is very big and also has a really nice resolution. The downsides which I have found are that the rotary encoders are a little bit unresponsive some times and to move the waveforms on the screen it takes it's time, but other than these waiting issues I've been taking measurements really comfortably and usefully.

This scope is feature packed, and feels like a high quality piece (haven't had it long enough to judge the actual quality). I was originally going to buy a used Tek DSO off eBay, but you can get one of these for less, and with a ton more power and memory.
The only things I can really complain about is the menu select knob and the lack of a dedicated back key. The select knob doesn't have detents, which makes it very easy to shoot past what it is you are trying to select, and also makes it too easy to advance or back up one item when you press down on the knob to make a selection. The lack of a physical back button often makes you hunt two pages of menus away to get to the soft back key.
Overall, though, I can live with those two minor items at this price point.

I found the operation of scope and its features to be self explanatory & very easy to use. It has a Deep memory. A nice color screen that stores a substantial amount of information. It has a convenient USB interface on the front and and additional one on the back.
The probes that supplied are adequate and work pretty well but do not have the same quality feel as the rest of the unit. The probes are not proprietary so if you can use your own standard oscilloscope probes and they should be compatible. The menu selection for probes is per channel and accommodates a very wide range of probe values.
In my opinion this is a really nice scope and a great value for the price. The look and feel of the unit is comparable to more expensive scopes and if you're only going to use it for less than 50Mhz this would be a very safe choice.

I wanted an inexpensive to moderately priced scope for hobby bench work. Did a ton of research and noticed this DS1054Z. I absolutely love this product. Really feature rich, lightweight and small desktop footprint so great for my crowded workbench. The deep memory is a treat at this price point. The probes are fine. One worry I did have was potential fan noise since that seemed to be a common concern in many forums. My room is normally perfectly quiet so I knew this could be an issue. Well, now I have it and can say I can hear the fan but I do not find it offensive at all. It's really a soft low volume background thing that I don't even think about. The screen shares real estate with menus and read outs but it's still nice. The turn on time is 23 seconds, so I turn it on when I sit down and arrange other stuff. Input impedance is not switchable. I wish it was. So I guess I'll buy an adaptor. For the price it has soooo many functions and four channels which is fabulous. The warranty is 3 years, but, at this price that's fine too. All in all I'm very happy with my choice. BTW, shipping was reasonably fast and free and easy to track so thumbs up to Tequipment- I will use them again. Also, i have no affiliation with any of these companies but I do like to recognize good products or services.

This scope is almost to good to be true, especially for $400. I had bought a TENMA 2 channel scope 2 years ago, but the Rigol so outshines the TENMA in every respect.
The capabilities are amazing. Ireally wanted a battery powered scope for field work. so with somw $30 14.4V drill batteries running my incerter, I have a totally isolated scope great for transient work. I got by for decades with a 1MHz bandwidth that 50 seems like overkill for power system measurements.
The instruction book is great. Very detailed, and well written for a Chinese product. Isolated inputs would be nice, but I can live with 3 current loaded CT inputs, and one ground referenced voltage input.
I'm still discovering what this little scope can do.
I will be testing it soon ina high power capacitive discharge test to see how it survives that noisy environment. I have 2 power options: a 1599V isolation transformer, or my battery, inverter method It draws 2A from the battery about 25W A 3AH 14.4V nicad will run it for about 1 hr. This scope is so much better than my 35 year old 50# Nicolet (I'm a low budget operation) Grace & Peace!

I've been using o'scopes since 1960 servicing IBM computers. I DO wish I had the capabilities then that my DZ1054 now has. The only thing missing is the scope doesn't talk to you!! I do wish the DZ1054 had a probe that sensed that it was times one or times ten. I suggest to all that you should leave your probes in the times ten switch position and be sure to select or verify that setting on the vertical menu. I also recommend printing out the user guide from the furnished CD. An office supply store will do a print both sides for about $12.

I have a bench loaded with Tek/HP equipment of vintage ages -- all still solid, calibration has been pretty stable and they remain as good functional equipment. All great for working on classic boatanchor radios, but somewhat lacking for troubleshooting the newer model transceivers.
This Rigol scope has been a terrific update, and does more than one needs for these troubleshooting and building projects. And it does so at a great low price, complete with 4 probes for under $400.
The digital functionality has much to recommend it, and the integrated on-screen measurements capabilities (customizable) as well as the math functions add to the ease of use. It's a real delight to see the full array of measurements from a device under test on screen. It would be nice to have a full printed manual instead of what is essentially a quick start guide, but it does come with the inevitable disk substitute for that.
As a secondary benefit, since it comes as a freshly calibrated device, traceable to NIST it has allowed me to check the calibration of most of my older pieces of HP/Tek equipment to a reasonable level of accuracy. That alone probably paid for the scope...

The new adapter is slicker in design and looks more like a BNC attenuator by someone like Minicircuits. This tiny thing showed up in a huge 10" x 6" box which I felt was unnecessary for a 1" long BNC adapter as a small bubble mailer should of covered it just fine. Anyway the device makes an input to your oscilloscope appear as 50 ohms so you can test small radio transmitters. Don't get too crazy because it looks like it can only handle 250mW or so, but should be good for QRP radios and most exciters.

For a tinkering at home and light weight development projects, this is a great scope. There are not many scopes in this price range that offer the features that this scope does. I've been able to trigger on signals and have the scope show frequencies and voltage peaks with ease. As shipped, all the bells and whistles are unlocked in trial mode and the serial decode under the waveform is quite useful. The notable draw backs are that the scope probes feel pretty cheap but functional and the crispness of the drawn waveform is nowhere nice as the high end scopes that I use at work. Its a great device for its price, but certainly won't dislodge higher end oscilloscopes for corporate use.

This scope really impressed me. I sold my Tek TDS-210 and upgraded to the DS1054Z. I had read the reviews and I must agree with the majority of them, this is a great scope. The LCD screen is beautiful! It is 800x480, high resolution for a scope in this price category. It’s bright, crisp, has a wide viewing angle and is very legible even though some of the characters are pretty small. The buttons have a nice feel to them, many have LED back lights and the audible feedback works well. The shaft encoders for the voltage range selection have rotary detents but the other encoders do not. This makes sense on the channel vertical control, but the multi function encoder could use detents for easier selection of the menu items. The software drives them smoothly and accurately. All the shaft encoders have a detent setting when pressed, which is a time saver if you are near the extremes.
The amount of data the display shows is astonishing. Most simple measurements are made automatically, a great advantage for “on the fly” measurements. A manual cursor mode is available if needed. I really like the data decoder software. It’s perfect for decoding busses on microcontrollers. I mainly use this instead of my logic analyzer. The FFT math function is a welcome tool, as is the Multi level Intensity Grading feature. The measurements even includes statistics. The hardware frequency counter is a nice bonus. The Pass/Fail feature is very interesting, I can see myself using this for missing pulse detection or similar application.
The operation of this scope is straightforward in most cases. I figured out the majority of the features and operation without looking at the manual (in true engineering fashion!). There are a few idiosyncrasies, but nothing that would really interfere with most tasks. Most of these were cleared up once I read the manual.
The four scope probes are pretty nice. They are rated at 150Mhz, so they don’t interfere with the scope’s bandwidth. They feel sturdy, although not quite as beefy as the Tek ruggedized probes. They do have one advantage from the Teks. When placing the hook tips on, they make a nice solid click sound when seated properly. The Tek’s hook tips slide on without any sound, and I have missed a few times, as they didn’t make a solid electrical connection.
The only minor operational drawback I have encountered is that the record function does not work while in the logic analyzer decode mode. The large memory does help here, as the start-stop mode does work in the Logic Analyzer decode mode, so I can freeze the display and then review the data in detail. The fan noise issue isn’t a deal breaker, but it is noticeable, especially since my last digital scope was silent.
This is a fantastic entry priced scope. It doesn’t do it justice to be considered an “Entry Level” scope due to its vast feature set and construction. The fit, feel and finish implies this is a nice piece of test equipment. Nothing about this scope says “low cost or cheap”, other than the price. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I am very pleased with my Rigol 1054Z. It seems to do everything a Tektronix would do, at a price a home hobbyist can afford. I bought one for home hobby use but would recommend them to an electronics test or repair facility for basic measurements. The user interface is a little different, but I think it's actually more intuitive. You have one vertical scale knob, and you select which channel you want to adjust with it.
Also the probes seem just fine, they have 1x-10x attenuation switches on them. They did come with a little yellow plastic cap that I have no idea what to do with - looks like they are made to slip over probe tip, but they don't stay so I don't know.
I like having 4 channels because I can watch logic signals in real-time, then freeze the screen and zoom in to decode.
I give it 5 stars!

This is a very high quality scope, for the price of a quality multi-meter.
It is a rugged beautifully designed scope. That I was able to without directions start using. It is highly accurate, and very consistent.
I was able to connect with the scope over USB and Ethernet, using free software on the internet. It was not seamless but totally workable. I controlled the scope and I have received graphic images of the scope screen at my computer. You can also just use the USB memory port to store images of the scope screen to a USB memory key, as well. No interface or software necessary. You just have to push a button on the scope.
The scope truly surprised me, I had planed to use it for experiments that might damage the scope. After receiving the scope and seeing the quality, I am afraid to use it for that type of testing. I am going to risk one my old Tektronix scopes instead.

I decided to start searching for a digital scope a couple months ago. I've got a couple older teks but they're both quirky and unreliable. After extensive searching, reading tons of reviews about other scopes this one seemed to be the best value for the money. I really don't care for the quality of the supplied probes, but for the money it is what it is. The attachment that goes on the end of probe doesn't fit very snug and comes out quite easily if the probe is leaning downward, but since I have other probes I can make do. Scope wise it has way more than I can understand and use so I'm happy. A forewarning on the software, I decided to try to load it on my win7 computer, after restart windows wouldn't load. The software broke windows and I wasn't able to restore windows. It would be nice if there was a Linux variant for the software as I usually don't have problems with Linux stuff. If you're considering a purchase you won't find more value for your money look all you want but you're wasting your time, just go ahead and buy it NOW!!!!! :D

But wait - there's more. The ad stated that my credit card would not be charged until the product shipped. That was the ad - the reality was that my card was charged the day of the order.

Amazing fact is that for the price of four probes from a well known scope manufacture you can also get this 4 channel 1GS scope. The UltraView seeks to make the display more "analog" scope like and is a nice addition to DSO. Very deep waveform memory allows one to view captured data.
A couple of things to note. (1) the sampling rate is divided by the number of active channels in use. 1ch=1GS, 4ch=250GS. (2) The input filter selection does not have the adjustable digital filter offered on the 2ch version.

Received my Rigol DS1054Z yesterday via UPS. Arrived on time and was in great condition. Calibrated the channel-one probe with the built-in square-wave signal generator and began testing some PWM controllers. The scope is a great little scope loaded with many features some of which I will probably never use. The feature I need are easy to find and understand. The measure button automatically provides detailed measurements about the signal and the statics option provides a wide variety of real-time monitoring metrics. The sampling rate is great for this price range, and the display and rendering are fast and clear. Included are four probes with grounding clip and spring-loaded end-hook. The probe ends are very sharp. My probe rings came in yellow, black, pink, and blue, rather than yellow, cyan, pink, and blue as are the colors on the scope. No big deal. You also get some additional parts with the probe for special situations. I wish it came with a little bag for all the parts and the probes. I will just go buy one at Walmart for $5. This scope is the best for the price range and can be upgraded.

An incredible value for the orice, the ds1054z blows away everything in it's class. Besides a few little UI quirks, usability is very high. I wanted to make sure I got through several projects before writing a review and the overall impression was the ds1054z is a true winner for the general purpose scope crowd.
The only negatives I could find were the limitations on the decoder being stuck to screen buffer memory (turns out originally it was supposed to be capable of pulling from screen or memory), a few oddities with the UI (like not being able to fully remove measurements from screen without a power cycle or reset and the keyboard starting in Chinese while in English mode), and that a few of the probes had very touchy attenuation switches (sometimes not working at all on 1x. Fine on 10x).
Besides the quirky probes, the hardware is quite good. Dave's right, there may be some bugs, but the scope is overall very capable and especially so for the price.

To start: I like this scope a lot.
I just bought it last week.
It seems to work as advertized.
There are two things I needed to get used to:
1: The user interface is a little weird. I never read a manual, so I expect things to be intuitive. For example, when selecting a channel you get a pull-down menu, but it is hard to get out of that menu again.
2: There is no trigger input connector, like most scopes have. You have to use one of the 4 channels as a trigger channel. This is OK, but it does waste one channel in many cases.
The screen is very nice and high resolution. I think this is one of the better Tektronix knockoffs.

After having used a competitor's scope for a few days on a trial basis, I bought the DS1054Z (untried) because of it has more channels, much more memory, and a better display, all for a lower price. The initial learning-to-use-it time was longer for the Rigol, but that is because it has so many more options for capturing and displaying a signal. After two calls to the Rigol tech support line I was on-track and doing more than I thought possible. The User Manual is very detailed, but could use a going over by a native English speaker. For example: "Turn clockwise to increase the position..." should be "...raise the position..." And "push the button continuously" should be "repeatedly." But all in all it is an excellent manual except for the term "Memory Depth" which has more to do with the display than the fixed 12M point memory.
Bottom Line: a great scope at a very low price.

This is a fantastic scope for $399. ! I'm just getting started, but the users manual and programming manual are well written and straight forward. (over 200 pages each) The capabilities of this instrument are amazing. my first digital scope was a Nicolet explorer III from 1978 it weighed 50# had a screen you could barely see in bright light, and had a whopping 2k record length storage was on a 5-1/4" floppy disc and it stored unformatted a total of 8 records! It had a max sampling rate of 500kHz ( 5 MHz with a special plug in. I did like the standard 12 bit vertical resolution. (I still have 2 of these scopes I resqued from the scrap pile.
Getting the beast to trigger on what you wanted was trial and error. Since I was recording utility switching transients that was a problem. Using them in the field (utility HV substation) was a bear. in 1978 the Nicolet cost 10k$! and that is 1978 $! Anyway, this Rigol is 0.1 x the weight and 1000x the capability, and has 4 channels not just 2.
I'll give a better review after I've put it through some paces. So far it seems better than the 4k$ Fluke or Tectronics portables I've used.
One down side , no internal battery power, But I can run with an inverter off my own battery.

The Rigol DS1054Z is an exceptional 4 channel oscilloscope, decent bandwidth, and a beautiful screen. Despite the two month wait which was caused by a supply issue with Rigol (Not tequipment) after receiving the unit I put it right to work in the lab. Any annoyance at the wait was gone after experimenting with the features, previously I had access to a two channel techtronix set up which was great but having the two extra channels made sampling multiple points easily, accelerating troubleshooting. For the price, with the specs and built in features this really is a no brainer. While there is something nostalgic using a massive old school analog scope, the smaller digital scopes have easier to read screens with awesome built in functions.

What more can be said that has not already been said praising this unit. It is great. A couple things that I noticed were as follows:
1) the "Hook Clip" probe extensions have to be pushed on rather firmly until they click in place; I am apparently not the only one that didn't feel comfortable pressing them on as hard as they needed;
2) the "Measure" variables that can be put on the bottom of the screen are great until you try to remove them; I found where they can be "Deleted" but they stay in position greyed out. I haven't found yet how to get rid of them and bring up variables in a different order. Perhaps setting to the Factory Default will do that, but that should not be required.
These are admittedly very minor items and the scope is just what I needed, lots of functionality at a reasonable price.

My Rigol DS1054Z arrived today after a frustrating wait from TEquipment.NET. I had six estimated ship dates. I don't recommend buying from them if they don't have the product in stock. The scope looks good and works well. There are even upgraded features that will work for 36hrs. The extra features clock ticks down only while the scope is powered on, so you can stretch out the trial period for weeks or months.
I ordered the scope on the 15th of December. The fact that it arrived 7 weeks later doesn't bother me much. Let your customers know that it will take about 8 weeks before they see their new equipment arrive. Do not move the estimated ship day around more than twice after setting the initial ship date. And never let the estimated ship date enter the past! Below is a list of my actual estimated ship dates (ESD) in order.

TEquipment.NET response: Thank you for your feedback. I share with you the frustration with getting this unit on time. The multiple updates is noted as well. The port strike or slowdown delayed shipments up to 9 weeks longer than usual. We had units sitting on the dock for months. As we were getting updated we were sending these to our customers. In addition to this our normal 8 week lead-time to get items from Rigol ended up being 14 weeks plus the port delays on top of this made this item very difficult to nail on the lead-time. We did however finally get ahead of these issues this week and have lots of stock. The port slowdown has lifted as well.

The signal was clear and clean. I would like to make the trace signal even thinner, but can't ask too much for the price point. While working on a voice board for an analog synth, I got to know this scope even better. The self-calibration is very useful as well as the depth of detail necessary to adjust a 300 mVp-p signal. Professional grade 4 channel scope at a starter scope price! This unit is way beyond my expectations. Fairly quick and very accurate. Reasonably easy to use user interface, nice screen and a small workbench footprint. User manual can use some more detail, but otherwise very informative. My main gripe I have (as well as other reviewers have) is that the controls need to have a firmer detent to instill some confidence in quick setting changes. Not a biggie, but its something that could use improvement. Another issue I would like to see improved is the refresh speed of the UltraScope software when connected to a pc via USB.
If you have a version of the scope that was manufactured in 2014, be sure to apply the latest firmware update that addresses the jitter issues. Mine is new from the manufacturer (Jan 2015) and has no issues whatsoever. The biggest issue of this scope is to find it in stock! These things sell out FAST! Tektronix needs to watch their back!

The DS1054Z replaced my DS1052E and I am very happy with it. There are plenty of reviews available, so I will comment on a few things that I personally like.
The overall feel of the instrument is quite good, with easy to operate controls and more functions exposed via buttons. It is a bit heavier than the DS1052E so button presses don't seem to move it around as much. They moved the power button to the front, which is good because I could not get to the top button on my shelf-mounted DS1052, but bad because the unit slides around when you press the front button unless you hold it with two hands.
Of course, the larger display is the big upgrade. It is a lot easier for my tired eyes to read.
While I will eventually read the manual to understand what this instrument can do, I found it very easy to just plug it in and start using it

The positive reviews you are seeing here and places like EEVBLOG are true. This is an amazing piece of equipment. If you're debating between this and a cheaper unit, this is the one to get.
I've only used analog oscilloscopes in the past, yet the learning curve for the 1054Z is minimal. If you're familiar with using oscilloscopes/theory, you'll have no trouble learning it.
Everything you'd expect is there plus so much more. Single sweep mode is especially useful for inspecting digital signals you'd never catch on an analog one. Many automatic measurement options are available - Pk to Pk, RMS, rise/fall time, frequency, etc. Optional decoding features seem to work well, so far I've only tested i2c and had no trouble decoding.
Price is very reasonable considering all that you get. You'll find 4 probes, usb cable, software cd, manual and calibration certificate in the box.

This scope is great for a little more than a starter price. The four channels are awesome and the measurement functionality works well. So far there are only two specific nuances i noticed.
1. The menu botton on the top left corner of the screen only seems to switch between what type of measurements are shown next to the buttons (horiozontal, vertical, etc). It seemed like there could have been more functionality to it.
2. When zooming on a trace the cursor measurements do not follow onto the zoomed section, they are only visible on the main traces.
Otherwise this scope seems to be an awesome grab for the price. It is nice and small so it does not use a lot of desk real-estate. It has a nice clear screen. The buttons are fairly easy to navigate and use. Looking forward to test it even further. Have not had a chance to try the PC software yet.

The build quality on this instrument is top notch. It feels heavy, substantial; won't slide around the bench. The knobs and buttons are quality and nothing on this scope feels cheap. The fan is a bit loud, but is not too distracting.
It is also small, no larger than the DS1052E it was designed to replace. It has a very nice high resolution widescreen LCD as well. For the most part the menus are intuitive and well designed. The four probes are decent and have a 150MHz bandwidth.
Get the latest firmware from Rigol and update this scope -- it completely fixed the AC coupled trigger jitter and the 5us jitter problems that have been discussed on the eevblog forums.
4 channels, up to 1Gsps, 50MHz, with options for I2C/SPI/RS232 decoding, "digital phosphor" graded intensity display, super fast screen redraws, super deep memory... all for $400. No better value in any entry level DSO right now! Just outstanding stuff from Rigol.

A huge step up from Rigol's previous model, the DS1052E. The performance is not significantly changed, but the improved display resolution, much larger memory, and vastly improved software/user interface make this scope much easier to use. The extra two channels come in handy too.
As you'd expect for a scope in this price range, there are a few limitations - some odd behaviors with the probes in 1x mode, some jitter in certain triggering modes, and a menu system that can be tricky to navigate. Review of the Rigol DS1054Z

I have now had a couple of days and have been using it. First off this scope is great value. For the price nothing can beat it. If you need a basic up to 4 channel oscilloscope, I am not sure you can do better this. That said if you expecting to use some of the more advanced features like math functions and serial decoding there are some limitation to know about. First the serial and math functions only work on the information that is on the screen. This is kind of a big limitation. The amount of serial data that can really be decoded is very small. For math functions like the FFT this is very limiting on the spectral resolution that you have.
I have one major problem with my scope. There seems to be some leakage of the switch mode power supply of the instrument. It has a couple of spectral peaks in the range of 500KHz to 2-3MHz. The amplitude is about 20 to 200 mV at the 1x setting.
Pros:
Great value, nothing can beet it.
Simple and fairly easy to use.
Great interface methods like USB and Ethernet.
Auto set function is fast
Statics are very good
Cons:
Serial and math functions only use the data on the screen. This is kind of a limitation for what I had in mind when buying this scope.
Sample rate drops down when using multiple channels.
Not hardware upgradable for function generator or logic analyzer.
Still has the AC trigger coupling jitter problem.
Seems to have some switch mode power supply leakage to the analog front-end.

I have a degree in electric engineering, but it's not what I do for living. I was looking for a scope for my hobby of building audiophile quality gear. I was considering: 1) old-fashion CRT-based Tektronix scope, 2) USB-based scope, 3) Rigol DS1052E. I think that many hobbyists make similar decision and I hope my review will be helpful.
I was initially leaning towards option 1 due to better price, easy of operation and a great deal of experience I have with a 'regular' scope. However, after some lurking on eevblog.com and watching videos on digital scopes I realized that with a regular scope I will miss a whole bunch of functionality (self-calibration, measurements, FFT, etc). Digital scopes are packed with functionality, that will be fun to play with even if I will never need most of that functionality! :-)
I quickly decided against option 2 as a USB scope will need a laptop and the overall solution will be very bulky and clumsy. Price-wise, reasonable quality USB scope is on par with the DS1054Z.
Option 3 was an easy decision. For extra $80 you get 4 channels instead of 2, 12-bit resolution, a much better screen, and other perks.
Using DS1054Z for a week, I am glad to report that I am extremely happy with my decision. It's a very solid scope. The user interface is very intuitive and it took me only a few hours to understand how to use its advanced functionality. I cannot recommend this scope enough. If you are making a similar decision, I suggest to watch a couple of videos on youtube and visit eevblog.com.

I've worked in electronics technology for many years - and the progression of improvements in the fundamental instruments of the business continue to amaze me. I purchased this for my home shop - to add to my capabilities. While I still have an older analog 'scope, this new digital unit has so many "bells and whistles" you need some time to sort out the many options and adjustments. For the most part, the same logical system is used in other Rigol oscilloscopes I've encountered. The digital signal analysis modes for communication protocols are very nice tools, but they time out after a trial period. I'll probably get those later when the budget permits. The unit is light and compact. It comes with 4 probes as well. A cordless option would be nice, but not absolutely essential for my uses. So far I'm very pleased with the value and performance.

Going from an analog (Tek 2465B) to the digital world it has a lot of features I have to learn about to be able to use all of it's abilities. Mainly I deal with RF and it works fine. Surprising enough a 400 MHz sine wave is viewable, with reduced level(2 div) but enough to tell there is a signal there.

Purchased this scope to replace an older Rigol and I am not disappointed. I really love the fact that this scope has built in decoding for most of the serial protocols like I2C, SPI, RS232, and more. This saves me having to break out other equipment when testing communications. Everything about this scope is on par with other Rigol scopes. The only thing that I didn't like (and it's the only) is the fact that they use the larger screen to display the menus permanently. I would of like to have seen the extra space used for waveform display, but oh well.

So far this has been a great buy. I've been able to easily see the timing for an electronic circuit I'm building that needs to track A/C zero crossing. With four channels I can monitor the output of a H1AA, my data signal and the output signal and line up the output exactly with the wave.
There is some jitter on the screen so it's difficult to get precise measurements but that could easily be coming from the circuit.
Of course I've only used it for 2 weeks so I can't comment on the long term reliability but so far I'm extremely satisfied.

I was looking for a scope to get myself after my good ole Tektronix scope was starting to limit my hardware debugging skills. I needed a scope that had a nice large screen, 2 or more channels, and a good amount of memory to store long intervals of waveform data.
After scouring eevblog forums and asking there for suggestions, I bought this guy. Came very quickly, well packaged, and tequipment was really quick to reply to all my questions.
The scope itself is fantastic and does everything I need. 4 channels are extremely useful, the included probes seem rather descent, it is pretty well build and feels very solid. My one gripe is that the rubber feet for it are nowhere near slip-prevention enough. It still slides if you give it a good push, so when you are pressing those knobs to input your selection, which require a good bit of push, then the scope slides.
Other than that, fantastic product. I am probably going to buy myself a Rigol power supply soon too based on how well build this Rigol product is.

I got this scope to replace a 6-year-old BK2534. The difference is striking. The BK2534 is not a bad digital scope, but for the most part it is a digitalized analog storage scope, coupled to a nice digital multimeter. In the DS1054Z, Rigol has provided any number of features that simply couldn't have been implemented a few years ago. Some of them (some of the triggering modes, for example) are of uncertain (to me) utility, and they may have been provided only because they were so easy to implement. There's nothing wrong with that; maybe someday I'll realize that one of them is exactly what I need.
During several hours of exploring the scope, I experienced one freeze, requiring reboot. Similar experiences have been reported in some on-line forums. I can't reproduce the freeze, and I suppose that a firmware update will appear within the next few months.
Comparing it to the BK2534, the only criticisms I'd make of the DS1054Z are (1) the bigger case of the BK2534 let it be quieter, and allowed its manual and probes to be stored neatly inside it; (2) the handle of the BK 2534 could be swung around to hold it in various stable attitudes; in contrast, the DS1054Z can be only flat or tilted 15 degrees up, and the little legs allowing the tilt tend to fold up if the scope is jostled; and (3) the BK 2534 had a real-time calendar clock, so files and screen captures were automatically timestamped. These are niggles; the DS1054Z is an excellent instrument.
