The Megger TDR2050 Advanced Dual Channel Time Domain Reflectometer is part of the TDR2000 series of TDR devices available from Megger. All of these instruments have been specifically designed to locate faults in electrical power supply cables. The TDR2050 is at the top of this range and includes some of the most advanced TDR features currently available on any device.

The unit features a full-color high resolution 800x480 pixel WVGA display with backlight and adjustable contrast, making it easier to find faults on paired metallic cables. Minimum resolution is 0.1m / 0.3ft with a maximum range of 20km / 65kft depending on velocity factor and cable type. Velocity factor can be adjusted depending on the application between 0.2 and 0.99.

The TDR2050 features an IP54 rating, meaning the unit's outer casing is secure against limited dust ingress and light water spray. The unit is safety rated to CAT IV 600 V and features an EMC rating of BS EN 61326-1. The included standard fused test leads are also rated to CAT IV 600 V and are dust and weatherproof to IP54 as well.

The TDR2050 also includes an AUTO selection feature which makes TDR trace diagnosis faster by automatically choosing the best trace parameters depending on the range required. Users are able to manually override this function in order to fine tune and identify difficult faults.

With dual trace and dual cursor functions on the TDR2050, users are in complete control and can instantly determine distances between two points.

The trace comparison feature on the TDR2050 gives users the power to closely examine and compare trace conditions. The unit's high resolution screen, with backlight and user-defined color palettes, provides a vibrant display where trace comparisons can be easily examined for key events.

Trace Storage

The TDR2050 features internal memory for up to 100 trace results. Stored results can be viewed on-screen at any time or can be compared live with active traces to help find faults. Stored results can be downloaded to a computer via the unit's integrated USB port, using the included Megger TraceXpert software and the included USB lead.

Step TDR Function

By including a step function on the TDR2050, Megger has eliminated the issue of the Dead Zone effect. On a standard pulse TDR, the Dead Zone effect can hide near-end faults and even make them undetectable. With Step TDR technology, the TDR signal is sent through cables at full strength. The signal remains at maximum power until a disturbance is detected.

Distance Dependent Gain

Distance Dependent Gain helps to eliminate signal drop off on longer lines and cables by gradually increasing gain on the returned signal. This provides a more even representation of the relative attenuation across all points on a trace.

Fault Identification

Megger’s own built-in AutoFind mode allows for speedy identification of faults. One press of the AutoFind key automatically adjusts the range and gain, and positions the cursor to the first major event on the cable. Press the AutoFind key again and the cursor will jump to the next detected disturbance.

Find End Function

The TDR2050 also incorporates a FindEnd function. This feature allows the user to automatically search the trace in order to find the end of the cable under test. This is useful in situations where a fast cable length measurement is required.

For those who wish to maintain manual control, manual operation allows full override access to refine the response for easy fault identification.

Color Schemes

Having additional color schemes available increases the versatility of the TDR2050. Changing schemes is important and often necessary due to differing lighting conditions as well as limitations of the eye itself like color blindness.

The TDR2050 includes six additional color schemes on top of the default and outdoor schemes included as standard on Megger TDRs. There are also two custom slots where users can specify their own color schemes by changing color settings for up to seven screen elements.

Trace Tagging

The TDR2050 also incorporates a trace tagging feature. This feature allows users to add custom names to saved traces. Descriptive names like the circuit ID or building name will make analysis and review easier after testing is complete.

A text string of up to 32 upper and lower case alphanumeric characters with accents can be stored with each trace.

TraceXpert PC software

The TDR2050 comes complete with the Megger TraceXpert software, providing full control over downloading, reporting and uploading of saved trace results.
