I have used this to find 4 or 5 leaks in the last couple of weeks. Works well in the right conditions. I use a sniffer and u.v. dye with regularity and the ultrasonic is a good additional tool to find those problem leaks

Comparing Apples to Oranges

Apples and oranges are both fruits but they are very different and so are Helium Leak Detectors and Ultrasonic Leak Detectors (ULDs). The anonymous person who wrote the bad review of the AccuTrak VPE simply does not know and does not understand the difference between sniffers, especially helium sniffers and ultrasonics. The AccuTrak VPE can find under ideal conditions a leak around 3-4oz/yr or 80 to 100g/yr By contrast a Helium leak detector can find a leak 0.01g/yr. However the applications of these two detectors are very different like our two fruits.
Mr. Anonymous said that the VPE could not find a well known leak in a system pressurized with 5%He and 95%N. I assume the leak was under 4oz/yr or 100g/yr but we do not know the system pressure. Regardless the helium leak detector cannot find ANY leak in a system pressurized with 100% Nitrogen or in a system that is under vacuum something the VPE can do and does very well for thousands of technicians around the world because it is gas independent. Comparing the two and discarding the VPE because it did not find the “well defined leak” only shows the ignorance of Mr. Anonymous in leak detection. ULDs are great for a number of tasks but like any detector they cannot find every leak in every application every time. If you have wind in the test area no sniffer can find a leak. However you can have very strong wind and it will not affect the VPE from finding the leak because there is no wind that can travel faster than the speed of sound which is 767.269 mph
So before making judgments if a leak detector is better than another, one needs to know how they are used. In the hands of a good chef apples and oranges can make a great fruit salad but in the hands of someone who can’t even peel them properly can be a mess.
Sniffers, or the so called electronic leak detectors, do not replace ULDs and vice versa. You need both to be successful in finding leaks.

This product could not identify a well-defined gas leak from equipment under pressure with 5%He in N2 (leak previously located and calibrated by a helium detector). Neither tube nor rod helped and the headset just amplified background noise in the lab.
