Emerson moved away from a traditional handheld and launched their tablet-based TREX series to replace the 475 and older handhelds like the 375 and 275. The TREX series does everything that the 475 did and has additional capabilities, for example in addition to Bluetooth, it adds Wifi and USB. Optionally, Loop Diagnostics (order code L) can be chosen to include a 24 VDC power supply to power transmitters. It also includes the ValveLink Mobile app to perform valve diagnostics.
Fluke 754 is a fully documenting process calibrator in the price range of the TREX. It has limited HART communications for HART calibration menus in the HART device. While not fully HART capable, it can access the device calibration menus. The big bonus is its multifunction capabilities. Measure and source, volts, mA, RTD and thermocouple temperature, frequency, pulses. Optional pressure modules are available for measuring pressure to calibrate pressure transmitters. Fluke 154 is a tablet-based HART unit with full HART DD’s (device description). Quarterly free updates are available for DD’s. See more about DD’s in the Meriam discussion. Druck DPI 620G Genii series is a great value for full HART and/or Foundation Fieldbus capability plus it is a fully documenting multifunction calibrator functions. It has a smartphone-like touchscreen interface. There are several versions available. Select from models with full HART and Foundation Fieldbus (FF) to only HART or Lite version without HART or FF. They also have Profibus version available. Some Genii models are available with I.S. (intrinsically safe) approvals. The HART and Foundation Fieldbus can be updated free. HART/Fieldbus/Profibus if selected are complete, no limitations of just calibration menus like some other manufacturers. See more about DD’s in the Meriam discussion. This video provides a brief overview of the process for using a Druck DPI 620 Genii Multifunction Calibrator to calibrate a HART device. Meriam 5150 and 5150X (Z5150-MER and Z5150-MERX) have modernized the concept of a HART Communicator and made it more affordable. NOTE: The Meriam unit does not include nor offer optionally Foundation Fieldbus communications. HART field instruments have default parameters that can be accessed from a HART Communicator for setting ranges, for example, but are limited. Each instrument manufacturer has custom HART parameters that can only be accessed after publishing of the appropriate Device Driver (DD) and have it loaded into the HART Communicator. Of course, a new HART Communicator includes many instrument DD's, but in time they become outdated as new instrument models are released. Emerson charges several hundred dollars for their subscription. Meanwhile, Meriam offers free downloadable updates. The Emerson 475/TREX cannot accept the Device Drivers directly. Emerson has to convert them, then the published conversion file is released to subscribers for download. However, there is a time lag of weeks or months. The Meriam 5150 and 5150X accepts the DDs directly. They can be obtained from Meriam or from the field instrument manufacturer. Comparing the hardware, Meriam's QWERTY keyboard is a noticeable difference. Having a full keyboard makes it easier to enter tag names and other data directly. The Meriam unit also has a larger display and memory. Meriam also made ordering easier with just two models: 5150, the base model, and 5150X which is intrinsically safe and is designed for hazardous areas.
