Overview

The FLIR E60 and FLIR E8 appear to have similar specifications yet there are some important differences. While they both have the same infrared resolution, the E60 is a more powerful camera thanks to some key differences.

The FLIR E60 offers a better thermal sensitivity at 50mK compared to 60mK on the E8. This makes the E60 better for finding slight differences in temperature, so you can get more detailed temperature data in your images. The E60 also features a 60 Hz refresh rate compared to only 9 Hz on the E8. This means the E60 will provide a much smoother picture because it refreshes at more frames per second – this makes the E60 better suited to working with moving machinery.

The E60 also has a bigger screen (3.5-inch compared to 3-inch on the E8), making the details easier to see. The screen on the E60 is touch-sensitive as well, making it easier to use. The E60 surpasses the E8 again in the area of temperature measurement range – the E60 will cover up to 1202°F while the E8 can only read up to 482°F.

Another key difference is that the E8 is a fixed-focus camera – this means you cannot adjust the focus of the camera, so you must physically move back and forth to get the image in focus. On the E60, you get an automatic as well as manual focus mode to adjust focus to your needs. As for lenses, the E8 does not support interchangeable lenses while the E60 does – one thing to keep in mind is that for the E60, every lens change will require recalibration to the specific camera body.

The E60 also includes an LED lamp while the E8 does not include any external light. Both cameras include FLIR’s powerful MSX technology which embosses visible details onto thermal images so you can clearly see numbers, labels, and important structural elements. This eliminates the need for a reference image. On the E60, the LED light will help you capture better MSX images when the scene is dark, since MSX relies on the visible light image to emboss details.
