About
Ecom Instruments was founded in Germany in 1986. Within four years of its founding, the company introduced its first in-house developed explosion-shielded calibrator. This set the tone for the company’s future. Just four more years later, Ecom released the world’s first intrinsically safe GSM mobile phone, the first of many intrinsically safe devices to come from the company. Today, intrinsically safe and explosion-shielded products make up the majority of the Ecom product line.
The current Ecom product line includes a range of intrinsically safe tools for mobile computing, communication, portable lighting, measurement, calibration, and worker protection. Of these products, the company is probably best known for its intrinsically safe devices for mobile computing and communication. That’s because Ecom was the first manufacturer in the world to design and bring to market intrinsically safe tablet computers, smartphones, and mobile laptop computers.
The company’s current line of intrinsically safe tablets includes versions based on the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active as well as Windows tablets. These devices feature Android and Windows operating systems, built-in cameras, and specialized touch screen displays up to 11.5-inches in size which allow easy use even with gloves on. Specific tablet models are rated to IP65 and are secure against a 4 foot drop. Others meet the MIL-STD 81 OG standard for vibration. Products are available which are rated safe for use in Zone 1/Division 1 and Zone 2/Division 2 applications as well as non-hazardous environments.
Ecom intrinsically safe smartphones feature mainly Android operating systems. These phones are designed to be rugged and feature Gorilla Glass 2 touch screen displays which can be used with gloves on or even with wet hands. Phones are available which are rated safe for use in Zone 1/Division 1 and Zone 2/Division 2 environments. These smartphones are also rated to IP68, meaning they are dust and shock proof in addition to being highly waterproof. These are the rugged phones you need for industrial applications.
