The Sorensen XDL series II represents the "next generation" of high-performance laboratory power supplies. The XDL provides multiple ranges for increased current capability at lower voltages and uses pure linear technology. Unlike other digitally controlled units, the XDL series II provides both numeric and rotary control, while the illuminated keys and display legends provide instant confirmation of settings and status.

Sorensen offers several models in its XDL Series II. Product variables include:

• Terminal placement – front only or front and rear
• Remote control with full bus interface (GPIB/RS-232/USB/LXI LAN); indicated by right column titled “RC”

The XDL Series II provides multiple ranges for increased current capability at lower voltages. The XDL56-4, for example, is a 112W PSU with three ranges. The main range offers 0 to 56 volts at up to 2 amps. The higher current range provides up to 4 amps for voltages up to 25V. A further low current range provides an enhanced current setting and measurement resolution of 0.1mA.

The XDL Series II uses pure linear technology and offers unrivalled performance in terms of regulation, output noise, and dynamics. Line and load regulations are close to the limit of measurement. Recovery time from transient current pulses is better than 50μs. Differential output noise is less than 350μV rms in CV mode and down to 20μA rms in CI mode. Of equal importance for critical applications in areas such as telecoms is common mode noise current (the noise current flowing between the output terminals and ground). This is less than 4μA rms on the XDL Series II - dramatically better than most other PSUs.

The XDL Series II provides full remote sense capability via dedicated sense terminals. Remote sense is essential to maintain regulation at the load (two 0.01 Ohm connection leads will drop 100mV at 5 amps). When remote sense is not required, internal local sensing can be selected at the touch of a button.

This series can also be remotely controlled via its RS232, USB, LAN, or GPIB interfaces. USB remote control operates in a similar way to RS232 but via the USB connector. Software supplied with the instrument sets up the controlling computer to treat the USB connection as a virtual COM port. Application software on the computer can then access the instrument via that COM port.

The LAN interface is designed to meet LXI (Lan eXtensions for Instrumentation) version 1.2; the instrument is Class C compliant. Remote control using the LAN interface is possible using the TCP/IP Sockets protocol. The instrument also contains a basic Web server which provides information on the unit and allows it to be configured from a web browser. Simple command line control from the browser is also possible.

All interfaces are, by default, live at all times (an LXI requirement), but access to individual interfaces may be restricted using the configuration options on the web pages.
