AC-EZ Touch-Less AC Voltage Sensor

The Santronics AC-EZ AC Voltage Sensor works very well and makes it easy to check for live AC wires, outlets, etc. Once you have one of these it is much more convenient than using a DMM that requires connecting two probes to determine live circuits. Whereas the AC-EZ Sensor is Touch-Less and Direct Contact is Not Required. You just have to place its Sensor Tip very close to the wire/terminal being tested for having AC Voltage (50 VAC minimum). You can even often use it for tracing and finding a failed incandescent Christmas tree lamp in a Series String Lamp Set.

As an Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, I used and tested many brands of AC Sensors over the years. I found the Santronics AC-EZ AC Voltage Sensor to be the most reliable and simplest to use. I gave one to both Ben and Eddie of "Geiger Heating and Air" (Gulfport MS) in August of 2020 when they installed a new AC Unit at my residence. I recently bought 5 more to give to my sons and grandsons. The high level of reliability, simplicity and compact size are factors that "Encourage" use of the Santronics AC-EZ AC Voltage Sensor to work safely with or around AC Voltage.

Had one for 15 years, and prefer this over many of the new ones as you can pick out the hot wire with fairly tight proximity to other wires, great for troubleshooting. Many of the others go off within 5 inches of a hot wire. Great if that's what your checking for, but useless for troubleshooting.

I received this as a free gift for purchasing some equipment. That being said, I now have to feel guilty about throwing it in the garbage even though it didn't cost me anything. Just for kicks, I tried it on an outlet and it worked as a non-contact voltage detector but I felt uneasy about the fact that I could shake the unit and make the light flash. I don't trust it, so into the "round organizer" it goes.

The two Fluke 2AC non-contact voltage detectors that we received previously as free gifts from TEquipment are more reliable and those did not find there way into the trash can.

Thank you those but no thank you for the Santronics one.

Tequipment response: Thanks for the review. A few things to note. Hitting the unit and having it light up is a safety feature to check the battery. This brand used to make this same model for Fluke called the 1ac. Fluke has since made their own 2ac pen with a few different features.

I received a model #3115 as a free gift when I purchased my new oscilloscope. This is a good device for detecting live AC lines. It is a small easy to use and understand AC detector that doesn’t require two bare wires to make a reading.
I already have a Greenlee Voltage detector #1110, which performs the same function. Although both units work as advertised, the Greenlee has some features and performance that is superior to the #3115.
The Greenlee has a beeper, so that’s an immediate improvement. The Greenlee also seems a little less prone to false positives, perhaps it has better noise immunity. In a side by side comparison, the Greenlee’s sensitivity seems on par with the #3115.
The #3115 is a good device and a potential life saver as far as AC electrical work. The Green Lee has an audible alert, but at the end of the day, both work and perform their functions as advertised.

Many of the reviews here are glowing about this item. The one I received was so terrible that I have not taken it out of the package.

Pros: It does detect electrical current
Cons: It also detects bumps, shakes, walking, general movement, perceived movement, air currents, and possibly imagined movement.

If I only had this to detect current I would genuinely fear for my life.

Tequipment response: The bump feature is for safety. You bump the unit to make sure its on. This company used to make the same item for other very large test equipment brands.

The Santronics AC detector was included as an option with my order of a Rigol Scope. A large box arrived with many layers of packaging and in the bottom was this lonesome blister pack with the probe. The batteries had already been installed and every time the package shook the lights blinked. I guess it was happy to see me. The probe was tested with wall outlets and wall wart adapters and works great. It will identify the hot and neutral legs on outlets and power cords. I thought it was going to be too sensitive but it has settled down and performed great. Overall a great device to add to my collection and the delivery from TEquipment.net was super fast.

This unit lights up when just touched, bumped or looked at directly... It reminds me of toys I used to swing in the air at Rave parties in my early twenties. Since it goes off in the absence of AC voltage within yards of the unit (and probably further if I cared enough to test it) I would never trust my safety to it... ever. It got two stars only for reminding me of younger days...

Feels cheap. The battery cap screws in and doesn't seem like it will last long. The unit claims to be sensitive but you have to stick the unit into the outlet before it indicates there is ac voltage. Just running it outside the outlet will not be enough and that could be dangerous.

The cheap ac voltage detectors I bought from Walmart years ago does a much better job. I don't even need to touch the outlet before it indicates voltage. It can even indicate voltage on light switches by touching the cover. The walmart one also give you audible and visual notification.

I received this as a promotional item when I bought an oscilloscope. It seems to work OK, but I prefer my Fluke VoltAlert TAC-A II, mainly because the Fluke also goes beep, where as this one just lights up.

For the price of zero it is nice to have though.

I really like this ac voltage sensor and the price is not bad at all. The only complain I have is that it is very sensitive and sometimes the light turns on just by handling it with no el. magnetic field anywhere near the unit.

This voltage detector is one of many that I've owned, a few things that stand out:

- "Tab" on probe end actually fits in a NEMA 5-15R socket. (This seems like a no-brainer, but many don't.)

- Unit only flashes red, there is no audible indicator.

- Unit seems rather sensitive to things like static, random blinks while held in open air / sitting on a desk are common.


Overall, a pretty solid unit, one of the better ones I've owned.

This unit came as a gift with Fluke purchase. So, it is considered a good price?
It works okay but with a shake or a bump on the unit, tip flashes. You are trying to see if AC line is live or not using this. Then I would think you want more stable in terms of indicator flashing.For safety, checking actual voltage with multimeter would be best choice.
