The Megger MIT400/2 insulation and continuity tester is designed not just for Electrical and Industrial, but with an exceptionally wide range of applications from electrical installations, cable testing, motor testing, automotive, ESD, panel building, avionics, maintenance, etc.

The MIT4002's insulation testing has been enhanced with feedback controlled test voltages to limit over-voltage to 2%, rather than the industry-standard 10-20%. A variable range has been added to allow any intermediate voltage from 250 V to 1000 V in 10 V steps, where application-specific test voltages are required that do not appear in the standard ranges.

Continuity testing is now significantly faster, and a single auto ranging 0.01 Ω to 1.0 MΩ function replaces the "ohms" and "kOhms" ranges. The MIT400/2 retains the 200 mA and 20 mA test options. Replacing the original Megger MIT400 instruments, this new unit features a redesigned case, back-stand, and 6 cell battery compartment with separate fuse access. This instrument is over-molded for increased protection and achieves an IP54 weatherproof rating.

Insulation Resistance Testing

The stabilized insulation test voltage in the MIT400/2 is now accurate to +2% -0%. This compares to the industry standard +20%, providing a more accurate test voltage without the risk of over-voltage damage to circuits or components. The output voltage is maintained between 0 & 2% throughout the test range. Where a non-standard test voltage is required, a variable range allows the exact test voltage to be selected from 10 V up to 1000 V. Subject to the same stabilized output control.

Even though insulation materials have improved over the years, they still can fail over time. The main reasons include moisture that collects from the equipment, vibration, dirt, heat, cold and the electricity that is traveling through the wire. You most likely won’t even see any physical damage. But as pin-holes get created, they allow more ingress of contaminants as well as leakage of electrical current.

Megger took a lot of feedback from users to make some small, but helpful changes in the /2 series. Most noticeably, they slimmed down the profile of the new units, molding the case to the body. No more separate boot to lose. This also gives the units an IP54 weatherproof rating. They also reinforced the kick-stand, making it able to hold up the unit for easier viewing. They also moved to a 6-cell battery compartment that now has a separate access area to replace the fuse.

The rule of thumb when testing insulation is that you want at least 1Mohm for each 1kV of voltage. The minimum would be 1MOhm. If you have a new motor rated at 3,000V, then you should see at least 3MOhms. Of course, this will change with the age of your equipment. That’s why insulation testing should be done periodically, as part of a regular predictive maintenance program.

The mains charger kit (1007-464) and car charger kit (1004-183) are only for use on the Megger MIT430/2 and MIT485/2. You cannot charge the batteries inside any of the other models.
