An anemometer is a measurement tool to assess wind speed or pressure. Unlike previous versions of anemometers that used windmills or cups, hot wire anemometers use a very thin heated wire. As air flows past the wire, it cools the wire. Thus, the electrical resistance of the wire is affected by the temperature change. The anemometer is then able to measure the resistance change of the wire. The use of hot wires allows anemometers to be compact and portable.
