The Hakko FX888D-29BY soldering station is well constructed and heats quickly. Brass cleaning and sponge built into the holder are nice. Only complaint is that it is not straightforward to set the temperature, but once set, it is retained in memory.

This Hakko product is one of the best investments you can make in a soldering station. This unit heats up quickly-it was ready to go well before I had my item fluxed and solder in hand, and the temperature recovery time is super-short. Once you have learned how to navigate the settings for temps and memory (not difficult), you are in for a great soldering experience. Well built and the iron is comfortable in the hand. I should have gotten this much sooner.

This is the best Hakko tip you can buy for the FX-888D. It is shaved on both sides making it easy to solder and heat up SMD and though hole components. They do make other tips but this is the one I like best for hobby repair!

My Everyday Tip

This is my 'everyday' soldering tip. I do design & repair work, and this tip does it all for me. I do about 99% through-hole work, so I don't do a lot of tip changing. This tip solders everything from IC pins to small ground planes. It's got the thermal mass I need to solder an entire PCB (6"x9") without slowing me down. And, the plating lasts a long time! Great tip! Also, Tequipment always has them in stock for fast delivery.

I did buy a separate brass sponge because I could not tell if this station had one or not, but that is not needed; the station does come with a sponge.
