I love this iron
5.0
I've been wanting an upgrade to my old 903's - I usually have at least two on at once, but with this one I don't feel I need them. It heats up FAST! It delivers the punch I need for varying soldering profiles, and it's really easy to just swap out the tip when I need a little more heat, a little less heat, or a different profile.

Hakko FX-100
Hi,I ordered this along with three T31-03XXX tips. Note at the time of ordering Tequipment did not have the T31-03XXX on their web site, but they graciously expedited my order via E-mail and I got the items. These are the lower temperature tips that came out in Jan 2015.A bit later, somewhat surprised, I also received a follow up phone call from Hakko America by a very nice lady sales person.I am a hobby person so not an expert in this area at all. My experience is with a Home Depot soldering iron and a temp controlled Antex soldering iron circa 1980 in England when I was a kid. I chose the Hakko FX-100 because I read the good reviews of the Metcal Iron from Oki and realized that Hakko now uses the same technology since the Curie Tip temp control patent ran out in 2012. I liked the look of the Hakko better, I know not a particularly valid purchasing decision point, and the price seemed better than the Metcals. The iron warms up very fast in about one to two seconds from picking it up out of the holder so that is a welcome change. I also like the Apple-ness of the design. I.E. it is simple. The are buttons and adjustments etc, but so far I have turned it on and used it, and it just works fine. No need to mess with any buttons etc., or really understand the manual. For reference I am using 0.015 inch Kester 44 solder which is the thinnest you can get I think. 63 / 37, so it is not RoHS compliant and has lead in it. I went this route mainly because I do not really know what I am doing, and read that this solder would behave in the easiest manner. Hence because the solder is thin, and melts at a nice low temp, I chose the new T31-03 350 degree Celsius tips.So far with a brief test it is working well, although perhaps a bit of overkill for what I am using it for.
