I expected the most from this product. After using my technician's desoldering tool with great results, I decided to get my own. Yep! Unless you have three hands, this tool is the best thing you can purchase to get a component desoldered. I've been doing it the hard way for years (retired) but now I've got the right tool and its a breeze! Just remember to release the clamp force on the vacuum collection chamber and dumpit out before you store the tool away. That way the gaskets remain fresh for the next time you use it. Be conservatve on the temperature setting. Burning off a pad is too easy.

Having used the copper desolder approach and suction approach, this thing is so so much faster, easier and better to use. I do say get a few different sized tips to cover your bases on what you would desolder.. but it really works well. Most of the time.. one suck per solder joint, and the component comes off.

I hated having to desolder something with a solder sucker (I think I was the sucker...) and/or desoldering braid. Using this thing is so easy. Heat it up, put it over the pin and when the solder melts pull the trigger. My Scottish heritage made me have doubts about the value for dollar. Boy was it wrong. This thing is worth every penny. I spent more than 30 minutes removing one of 3 pots on aboard with a "good" solder sucker and braid. So I gave up and put that board aside. I then ordered this and to try it out for giggles more than anything, I took this desoldering gun to the other two. I was done in a couple minutes - cleaner, faster, no damage and without headache.

The reviews were good on this desoldering tool so I expected it to work, but it surpassed my expectations. It makes desoldering fun instead of frustrating. It works just like you would expect. The tip works like a soldering iron with a hole in the middle - you hold it on the pin you want to desolder until the solder melts, then pull the trigger and it sucks all the solder off instantly. This tool is a real keeper. I considered buying one of the cheap ones from another vendor, but after using the Hakko, I'm glad I paid for a real professional tool. I bought this tool to desolder some components from multi-layer PCBs where I was finding my other spring-solder suckers were not working well..
This tool is really good for that. Its almost makes it fun to do desoldering. It safely removed my micro-switches and other components from my multi-level PCBs with NO Damage. And it was fairly quick to remote these components — those I did get the occasional lead that required me to reflow solder into the eyelet, and then desolder again. But even so — it did a super job doing this.
It has four heat settings. I had to used setting 4 for the multi-layer PCBs. I also removed quite a number of burned out LEDs from a single layer PCB. Setting 1 was adequate for this. This was where it was really “fun” to desolder, as it only took about two seconds per leaded to de-solder, and quite literally the LEDs DROPPED from the PCB after I desolder red them, and the resulting PCB pads remained in MINT condition. I was really impressed.
I didn’t find the unit got too hot too hold, and it was lightweight, and comfortable to hold.
The only thing I would suggest to people considering buying this, is to make sure you buy one of Hakko’s drill cleaning bits when you get this unit. The poker that comes with it will not always clean the desoldering tube and it might become totally clogged. However if you have the cleaning drill, it is relatively easy to clear up solder that might be blocking the tube.
Over all, I would highly rate this.. I wish I had purchased this years ago. It would have made it so much easier for me!

ive been using the classic 20 dollar bulb suction de soldering iron for years. that thing was a hit and miss i would often damage traces trying to get chips off with it. after breaking a few game consoles over the years i finally took that piece of crap and tossed it and broke down to get this.
this desoldering gun is night and day difference i cant recommend it enough!!! don't waste your time with the cheap alternatives! this just work 100% of the time its also much faster than the cheap methods. the time it takes me to remove a chip is cut in half and it comes off with out breaking traces and no flux required either! clean up is a breeze too!

This is my first de-soldering tool. I researched many de-soldering tools before making my purchase and even though this tool had great reviews I was still skeptical. Now that I have used it for a while I can`t imagine being without it. It very easily and cleanly pulls up the solder and cleaning the collection chamber is fairly easy too. I also love that it is not another a big box sitting on my bench. I haven`t tried an extended length tip but I suspect they will work well. I went to trade school for electronics repair a couple decades ago. We learned to use solder wick and cheap solder suckers. I've been using those for years. I knew these desoldering irons existed but I thought the solder wick was fine (it does help that I have a nice JBC iron). Well I saw this in use on Youtube channel Mr Carlson's Lab and I decided to give it a try and WOW! I've used it to repair several items. I replaced some high current relays yesterday and I put this to power 3 out of 5 and I don't even think I needed to turn it up that much. It melted that stuff like butter. The vacuum function works really well.
The only other desoldering iron I have owned in the past was a Radio Shack one many years ago that cost somewhere between $25 and $50 and that was totally useless. I can't compare this product to any other actual decent products.
But for the price I doubt other brands would stack up.
I do recommend getting a better stand. I don't really enjoy laying the iron on its side with the "stand" (more like tip protector) it comes with. But it does more or less work.

I used my new Hakko FR-301 desoldering gun for the first time yesterday. I was very pleased with the performance of the gun. It is comfortable to use and does a really good job of cleaning out via holes, leaving through-hole component leads free to drop out.
To save their tips from oxidizing and making them difficult to wet with solder, I typically turn irons off while doing other operations until I am ready to use them again. The FR-301 comes up to temperature quickly which facilitates this.
The only complaint I have with the unit is that the power-on indicator light is on the wrong side of the handle. The indicator on the FR-301 is not visible when the gun is parked in its stand. It would be better to have the indicator visible from any vantage point at any angle, or at the very least somewhere on the back, like perhaps on or around the power switch itself. As it is now, you have to remove the unit from the stand and turn it around to veiw the indicator. It could be brighter too. Presently, it is rather dim and difficult to see. The FR-301 is, otherwise, an excellent tool.

After my venerable Pace desolder station died, I needed an inexpensive and reliable desolder unit! Purchased the Hakko FR301 but it only comes with the 1.0mm tip.
