The Voltage Detector is a proven life-saver, with more than 20 years of service in telecommunications outside plant and power utility applications.
The Voltage Detector detects ac and dc voltages through a long-life carbide tip, which is protected by a plastic cap when not in use. To use the Voltage Detector, you simply place the carbide tip on the object in question, press the magnetic trigger, and observe the LEDs. If the green LED illuminates, the surface being touched is free from electrical hazards. If the red LED flashes, dangerous voltage is present.

Good voltage probe

Much better than the non-contact "volt sticks" that you see around these days. This is a contact voltage detection probe that allows for ground reference options for added reliability, but works quite reasonably with no ground reference and just being held. As far as I can tell, it is an exact continuation and copy of the old Western Electric 188A "stop light" voltage tester used by linemen in the Bell system, so that they could tell whether utility poles and associated equipment were energized.
