I paid just under $100 for this Fluke 62 MAX , but now it's on clearance for $64. I'm thinking about buying another one. It's accuracy is excellent (about a degree or so), and if you scan an area it will capture the high and low temperatures and also compute the average temperature over the area. The instruction sheet is sparse -- all drawings, no words -- and doesn't provide any information on the emissivity correction for various materials (which can be changed in the settings), but that's a minor issue. I'll be curious to see why it's on clearance. Presumably Fluke is coming out with a new (and higher priced!) meter, but this one already seems to do anything I could think of in an IR thermometer.

I'd been using a $30 IR thermometer, but decided to spring for the extra bucks mostly because of my prior excellent experience with Fluke products. I've not been disappointed. This thermometer is a great design, and extremely rugged. It has dual laser pointers which enclose the sampling area. A really clever feature is that the spots seem to rotate at different distances, so by eyeballing the angle one gets a sense of how far the meter is from the object being measured. This is a very helpful feature when taking repeat measurements of something.
The high/low feature makes it possible to scan over, e.g., a door, and find the coldest or hottest spot on the door. Similarly, the averaging feature can give a good estimate of the average temperature inside, say,a kitchen oven. The laser spots also are also great for tormenting your cats, who will go to great (but futile) lengths to capture them.
Interestingly, I only saw a degree difference in temperature accuracy, when comparing the Fluke to my $30 meter. I'm guessing they both probably use the same sensor. But it's the extra user features that justify the Fluke. I'm very pleased with it, and it's probably the cheapest thing I've ever bought from Fluke, a company for which a hundred dollars is typically just roundoff error.

The Fluke 62 Max Plus is a great update for the already perfect model 62 Max. It is faster to use and more accurate than the Max. The dual laser make identifying your target faster too. The new Web site here allows a very easy comparison of the two tools and the Max plus has come way down in price.
For a case, either the C23 or C90 fits great.
