Quickly locate, record and resolve electrical issues with one simple to use tool. The FLIR DM284 is the latest in electrical testing technology. Harnessing the power of thermal imaging, it allows users to quickly scan a general area for hot spots. After finding expected problem areas, they can simply use the DM284's 18 function TRUE-RMS digital multimeter. Your all-in-one tool The FLIR DM284 Imaging Multimeter with IGM Technology has been developed by FLIR to allow users to more quickly and more accurately detect electrical problems. With its built-in 160X120 thermal sensor and IGM technology, the DM284 is able to point to the exact location of electrical problems through hotspots during the troubleshooting process. Instead of connecting to each individual component, users can easily use the thermal imager to scan all components and observe where the problem lies. Saving a substantial amount of time and resources. After finding the location of the issue with the thermal imager, use the DM284’s Multimeter functions to confirm your findings and obtain exact measurements. IGM (Infrared Guided Measurement)

Even though the resolution of the DM284 is over 400% higher than the C2 the price is very similar. The C2 has the ability to store images where the DM284 does not. If you do not need to save the image the DM284 is an incredible value for a thermal imager with a 160x120 resolution. The C2 also has MSX built into the unit which adds a level of contrast to enhance the image.
The Fluke 279FC has a 80x60 thermal image and the Flir DM284 has a 160x120 thermal resolution.
The unit cannot save images. It gives you a visual reference for finding hot spots by seeing the thermal image.

Neat

This DMM is a replacement for an old Radio Shack Micronta. I feel like I have been living in the past! This thing is loaded with useful features, and has ranges that will work well with the electronics work I like to do. The thermal imager is icing on the cake. I have used it several times in the short period that I have had it. Do yourself a favor and spring for the rechargeable battery pack. It eats AAAs. I am an electrical engineering student in my senior year and have used many different DMMs. This one is by far the neatest one.

A great combination
I purchased this meter after reviewing its TEquipment promotional; the marketing emails worked on me this time. I have a Fluke Ti20 which is no longer compatible with windows, requires manual focusing, and has terrible battery life. The DM284 has better resolution, better focus, and greater utility. I troubleshoot power electronics often and the combination of a high quality DMM and IR camera is very helpful. When checked for accuracy against our calibrated Fluke voltage meters and Sencore LC meter the DM284 was dead on. It is a little bulky, and the batteries go quickly when using the IR camera often but these are minor trade offs for its convenience. Would love to have some way of saving an image to external memory, but pressing the hold button and taking a cell phone picture works fine as well. Overall a lot of meter for the money.
