Wireless Multimeter Transforms Diagnostics & Improves Worker Safety
The game-changing Extech EX540 wireless digital multimeter and datalogger was the first handheld multimeter to offer wireless data streaming to a laptop or PC for datalogging or real-time monitoring. The innovative meter offers wireless connectivity to your laptop or PC using a USB receiver with a range comparable to Bluetooth (10 meters/33 feet). The EX540 transmits real-time data for monitoring, trending and analysis (using the included software). The DMM is part of the EX500 series of industrial multimeters. Extech's ruggedized, waterproof design can withstand a 6-foot drop, making it the ideal starting point for a go-anywhere DMM. Now, industrial maintenance and electrical professionals can monitor and datalog readings at a safe distance from hazardous locations. Additionally, it is easier to perform remote tasks such as powering up a device from a control panel that is not nearby. From a time-saving perspective for laptop users, the EX540 permits a user to set up his or her laptop at a centralized location and then sequentially datalog readings throughout a site without relocating the laptop.
A Ruggedized Multimeter
Ruggedized to industrial-duty specs, the Extech is a True RMS DMM. It can be very difficult to make accurate current and voltage readings in industrial and commercial applications when electronic devices are present. Fluorescent lights, motor drives, computer power supplies, and other electronic systems can distort the AC waveform, making it hard for averaging meters to get an accurate read. True RMS uses a more advanced formula to compensate for this kind of distortion. In addition to wireless datalogging, the EX540 can log up to 9,999 readings internally and also reads voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, frequency (with dual-range sensitivity for electrical and electronic work), duty cycle, continuity, diode testing (2.8 volts), and even temperature (using its Type K thermistor bead probe). The new meter features 0.06 percent accuracy that is a tough-to-beat, and a CAT IV-600-volt overvoltage safety rating, protecting users even on outdoor wiring. Several one-button data functions include minimum/maximum, relative, hold, and peak hold as well as selectable auto-ranging or manual-ranging. To avoid fussing with selecting the right measurement range when working on a variety of components from small electronics to main electrical sources, the meter automatically adjusts with autoranging. An analog-style bargraph complements the EX540's informative triple-reading display. The Extech EX540 includes double-molded test leads, USB wireless receiver, temperature probe, magnetic hanging strap, 9-volt battery and carrying case. Additionally, NIST calibration is available.
An Award-Winning Multimeter
The EX540 was awarded a 2010 NECA Blue Ribbon Showstopper Award. The award is given to exemplary products exhibited at the National Electrical Contractors Association NECA Show. Of the 116 entries, 20 products were selected to receive awards. The EX540 was featured in the January 2010 issue of Electrical Contractor magazine, the official publication of the National Electrical Contractors Association (US). The meter was also a 2010 EC&M Product of the Year Category Winner for the Portable Measurement Equipment (Multi-Function) category. According to Electrical Construction & Maintenance (EC&M) magazine, 99 products across numerous categories were evaluated by a panel of six judges selected from their readership with a representative mix of electrical engineers, contractors, and plant facility personnel. Powered by a 9-volt battery, the device has an auto power off function to conserve battery life. The Extech measures 7.25 x 3.25 x 2.25 inches (HxWxD), and it weighs 12 ounces. It's backed by a three-year limited warranty. Additionally, NIST calibration is available. The EX540's wireless frequency (915 MHz) is suitable for use in US, Canada, Mexico, and select other countries. Please see the EX542 (433 MHz) for most other regions.
