This meter is a broadband device for monitoring high-frequency radiation in the range of 10MHz to 8GHz. The non-directional electric field and high sensitivity also allow measurements of electric field strength in TEM cells and absorber rooms. The unit of measurement and the measurement types are expressed in units of electrical and magnetic field strength and power density. At high frequencies, the power density is of particular significance. It provides a measure of the power absorbed by a person exposed to the field. This power level must be kept as low as possible at high frequencies. The meter can be set to display the instantaneous value, the maximum value measured or the average value. Instantaneous and maximum value measurements are useful for orientation, e.g. when first entering an exposed area.

Extech 480846 EMF Meter
2.0
The meter has a nice large display with important functions like Max/Ave but every time you press the Max/Ave button, to cycle through the functions, it appears to lose the previous value and you have to start all over again--which is ok if that's what you want to do. Many times, the meter does not respond when the buttons are pushed and you have to press them again many times---which is ridiculous with a meter that costs this much. The case on mine looks like it has many superficial cracks in it, has a circular mar and a small dimple in it. No calibration certificate comes with it but one comes with the TES-593, which is apparently made by the same company. It is difficulty to get support from Extech. I have called several times and left messages and so far I have not received a call from them. I am still waiting for them to call back as a result of me calling them and speaking to a Tech after waiting more than two weeks.

This was purchased as a hopeful substitute to do a emergency fieled test for EMC in lieu of spending a lot more money. It is well made for the cost, but did not serve the purpose intended very well, but this is not the fault of the instrument.
