The Pur-Chek™ HVAC/R refrigerant identifier is an advanced A/C service tool for contractors and consolidators. Applications.

Consolidation.

Many Wholesalers/ Distributors have instituted programs to take back recovered refrigerant from their customers. The most popular of these programs focuses on recovered R22 offering a credit to the contractor for the return of high quality R22 refrigerant. The contractors will service both R22 and R410A systems using the same hoses gauges and vacuum pumps and this can cause small amounts of R410A to be introduced into the R22 reclaim cylinder. The contamination caused by this process will result in not only zero credit for the returned refrigerant to the contractor but also a significant disposal charge to the contractor. In the past, many Wholesalers/ Distributors would send the R22 refrigerant to the reclaimer to have it analyzed and then be forced to back charge the contractor who brought them the refrigerant if it was mixed. Clearly this was not an easy task leading to mistrust and poor customer relations. The Pur-Chek allows the Wholesalers/ Distributors to test the R22 refrigerant on the spot before the contractor leaves the facility and inform them if an additional charge or credit is anticipated.

Large Contractors.

Contractors working on a variety of HVAC/R systems will have to deal with many refrigerants including blend replacements for R22. As new restrictions on the manufacture, sale and use of R22 have been implemented, the price for R22 continues to rise. Drop-in replacements are gaining in popularity and without identifying the refrigerant, there is no way to know if the refrigerant in the system is truly pure R22. With the Pur-Chek, the contractor will know what is being recovered before it is recovered to protect their valuable R22 supply from unnecessary disposal charges.

Frequently Asked Questions.

1. What is a refrigerant identifier? A refrigerant identifier is an instrument designed to differentiate between various types of refrigerants.
2. How do refrigerant identifiers work? Each type of refrigerant has a unique infrared signature. Identifiers take a small sample of the refrigerant and use infrared technology to interpret these signatures and identify the refrigerant.
3. What refrigerants can the Pur-Chek detect? The instrument can detect R134A, R12, R22 and Hydrocarbons. This unit will identify any combination of these 4 and give a percentage breakdown on these refrigerants.
4. How are the test results displayed? Test results are displayed on the LCD display including the refrigerant type and percentage. The total of the percentages not including “NON” will be 100%. Eg. R22 95%, R134A 5%.
5. What happens if I test a refrigerant that is not on the list of refrigerants this unit can test? You will get a unique fingerprint displayed on a screen that will list DET 1, DET 2, DET 3 and DET 4 and related values. It is helpful to test known good refrigerants and record the results for future reference.
6. What do DET 1, DET 2, DET 3 and DET 4 mean? These represent the R134A (DET1), R12 (DET2), R22 (DET3) and HC (DET4) detectors. This screen displays the fingerprint of either pure blends or contaminated refrigerants. If the values do not match any known pure refrigerant fingerprint, the refrigerant is contaminated.
7. Does my unit identify R410A? This unit will detect the presence of R410A but it is not able to analyze the purity of R410A. If pure R410A is tested, the display will read, “PROBABLE R410A REFRIGERANT” but will not give a percentage breakdown as it will on R134A, R12, R22 and HC.
8. What does NON mean? “NON” represents non-condensable gas such as air or nitrogen.
9. Does the Pur-Chek require calibration? Yes, calibration is automatic and done prior to each test. An annual factory recalibration is recommended.
10. What does the white filter on the top of my unit do and do I have to replace it? The filter on the top of the unit prevents small amounts of oil and liquid from getting into the unit. If red spots appear on the filter, it should be changed.
11. What happens if I get a large slug of oil in my unit? If you get oil into your unit the filter will turn pink or red. The filter must be changed. If enough oil has been ingested, the unit will display an error code and require service.
12. What different powering options are there? This unit can be powered in two ways: The default 90 – 240 VAC power adapter or an optional internal battery.
13. Can I power my unit from my battery charger? No the battery charger can only charge the internal battery.
14. Can it test liquid refrigerant? No, the instrument must only be used on Low Side Vapor samples. Liquid will cause damage and is not covered by warranties.
15. What is the maximum sample pressure? The maximum pressure rating is 300 Psig.
16. What is the minimum pressure required for operation? The minimum pressure required for accurate readings is 20 Psig.
17. How many tests can be run before the optional internal battery must be recharged? The Pur-Chek can run approximately 50 tests on a freshly charged battery
