I'm overall satisfied with the meter when the price is taken into consideration. I bought this to replace a very old Fluke multimeter that lacks modern safety ratings, so I was wanting a device with high safety ratings but didn't cost an arm and a leg. I like the 38XR-A overall, and here are some standout features. -While the screen is small, the font is very easy to read, has good viewing angles, and excellent contrast. -The back light is even and bright enough to richly illuminate the screen without being painful to look at. -The sounder is at a good, modest volume. I also like the pitch. My ears are a bit sensitive and don't much like high-pitched sounds, so this meter having a lower-pitched piezo is a nice surprise. -Clearly very safe and well designed. High-strength SIBA brand name fuses are present in my example, and it's even got a populated spare mA fuse holder! -Good leads. They feel high quality and I like the screw-on caps. -Nice function buttons. Not something I often notice but they have a nice feel and look. Those being said, there are a couple of cons that stick out to me. They are fairly forgivable considering what you get for the money, but still noteworthy. -The dial is pretty bad. Rough to turn, loud, and its very easy to fall between detents and be left wondering why the meter isn't turning on. -Autorange can be pretty slow. Its accurate once it gets there, but sometimes it takes an awkwardly long time. -Pretty big, but it's not egregiously heavy. -Yellow on red might not have been the best choice for secondary functions. In some lights it can be hard to read.

Obvious Corner-Cutting

This meter is right on the cusp of do/don't recommend. It's obviously well built and I have no doubt that the high protection ratings are the full truth. That is very much helped by the dual CSA/UL ratings. However, the meter has some issues that make it annoying to use. -The mode selector is extremely cheap. It takes a lot of force to turn it, makes a lot of noise, and it's rather easy to get in between settings where the meter won't turn on. -The screen is small compared to other meters at this price point. At least the backlight looks nice. -Very slow measurements and auto-ranging. No matter the mode, it takes the meter an annoying amount of time to figure out which range is the best one. I also have issues with resistance measurements jumping around while I am holding the leads solid against something. -Very big and heavy, even for it's overcurrent protection ratings. -This is a nitpick, but it's irritating that this does not come with a case. I'm glad I had an extra meter bag laying around or this would have to rattle around without protection in my tool bag. I bought this meter to replace a 1980s Fluke that I had been using as my main unit. Aside from modern CAT ratings and the limited RS-232 software, I don't feel like I gained much.
