The Keysight 34465A Truevolt digital multimeter (DMM) is the next-generation DMM for users that own the Keysight/Agilent 34410A, 34411A, or L4411A. The new Truevolt DMM was designed by the same group that designed the previous generation of DMMs, with many of the same R&D engineers participating. With this continuity of experience and expertise, Keysight has made a DMM that is a virtual drop-in replacement for the 34410A or 34411A while continuing to evolve usability and measurement technology.

Measure with Unquestioned Truevolt Confidence

What Truevolt technology means to you: You can measure your real-world signals, not instrument error Noise and injected current: Keysight Truevolt DMMs contribute less than 30% of the injected current than alternatives. Compared to some lower cost alternatives, Truevolt DMMs offer almost 100% less noise.
Input bias current: Ideally, no current flows into the measurement terminals of your DMM. In real measurement situations, there are always input currents creating additional measurement errors. Truevolt DMMs take care of input bias current. Some alternative DMMs offer 20% to infinitely poorer performance (some are too noisy to measure).
Digital AC rms measurements: For meters in this class, only Keysight uses digital direct sampling techniques to make AC rms measurements. This results in a true rms calculation technique that avoids the slower response of analog RMS converters used in all other vendor’s 6½ digit DMMs. This allows for crest factors up to 10 without additional error terms. This is a unique, patented technique – only used by Keysight.
You can measure your real-world signals with confidence All Truevolt DMM specifications are tested and guaranteed for compliance with ISO/ IEC 17025 standards so you can prove the effectiveness of your lab or production line’s quality management system. Many lower-cost DMMs in this class do not carry a guarantee of their measurement specifications.
You can take advantage of expanded measurement functionality Compared to the 34401A DMM, Truevolt DMMs offer expanded current ranges from 100 µA to 10 A. We have also added a temperature measurement function (RTD/PT100, 5 kΩ thermistor). Keysight 34465A

The bottom line is: great meter! I have had a couple of months to work with this device now and I heartily recommend it. One can power it up right out of the box and quickly collect measurements. But to really learn the meter and take full advantage of all of its features, one will need to spend some time trying it out and reading over the comprehensive manual. There are a lot of very useful math and statistical functions. The graphical capabilities of the display are fully utilized. The other meter I had been considering was a Fluke 8846A, which also looks like a great meter, but the Keysight appeared to have a more capable display.

I did download the software to run the meter from my computer and it did work fine, although I am not sure how much I will really use that system. The software is rather huge and leaves some components always running, which tends to annoy me. When I plug a USB drive into my laptop the Keysight software appears to automatically scan the drive for some reason. Perhaps people working in the electronics industry would find that useful.

Best bench meter

This is the best bench multimeter that I can imagine for any use that does not require more precision, and I can't think of many that would.
The user interface is very easy and responsive - I was concerned when it looked like it is using an embedded version of Windows, but, apart from a small delay when booting, all input responses are instant. The screen display is sharp and readable, the different display modes give better information than anything else I have seen in that class of devices.
The only criticism I can make is that the dual display mode, which can show two measurements at once, is a bit clunky. It is limited to few combinations like, for example, DC and AC voltage at the same time, but it switches between the two rather slowly with lots of relay clicking back and forth. My R&S HMC8012 is not in the same league for precision but does a better job of managing dual measurements, able to show voltage and current at the same time, and alternating smoothly between the two.
The recording function is very powerful, allowing you to control the time span, interval, or number of measures, the only limit being the 4GB maximum file size imposed by FAT32 on the thumb drive.
The math, null, and hold functions all work exactly as you would expect without recourse to the manual or searching through menus.
I thought that the extra cost over the 34461A is well worth it for the data logging capability and the extra sensitivity (1uA in DC current!).

Best in class bench DMM

The 34465A is part of the new Keysight mid-range bench DMM series 3446XA (34460A, 34461A, 34465A, 34470A) replacing the venerable 34401A and the somewhat younger 34410A and 34411A.

Unless you need the extra digit of the 34470A (but only a 2x accuracy improvement) or you are really cash strapped and have to go with the 34461A (the 34460A is not a great value, so not recommended), the 34465A is the bench DMM to get in the ~$1000-2000 category.

The GUI is very nice and usable. It is hard to overstate how nice it is to have a GUI, especially with support for trend charts and histograms. The 34465A has the accuracy and reliability expected from Keysight and has a number of small improvements compared to the 34461A, including ACAL to reduce the effect of temperature on measurements, much lower current support with a 1uA (vs. 100uA) range, thermocouple temperature support and better logging speed and modes (incl. direct to USB).

At this point, this DMM has very little competition. The closest is the aging Fluke 8846A, which has somewhat better specs, but little else.
